All day on the tarmac

Road running encompasses virtually every form of paved racing, setting itself apart from traditional track events held inside stadiums. The vast majority of these races are long-distance or ultra-distance events 🛣️.

Whether you lean towards a 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, or even an ultramarathon like the 100K, running has won the hearts of millions around the globe. The sport has endured through the ages ⏳, from Antiquity to the present day, offering runners both amateur and professional the chance to push their limits and live out their passion. Men, women, and children of all ages: there really is something for every taste, style, and mood! As a full-body workout that engages every muscle and delivers countless mental health benefits 🧠, running is deeply woven into the daily lives of many Britons 🇬🇧.

Road running is an adventure through ever-changing scenery. It can take you through the heart of great cities 🏙️, like the iconic London Marathon crossing Tower Bridge and heading down The Mall, or the autumn-gold Royal Parks Half winding through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. You can also run beside the sea 🌊, taking in the seafront and the Pier during the Brighton Marathon, or tackling the Great South Run's coastal miles in Portsmouth. Though courses are often flat, classics like the Snowdonia Marathon in Wales offer plenty of challenging climbs.

There are even festive winter races 🎄, such as the Portsmouth Coastal Marathon in December. Every event has its own unique identity! Some feature point-to-point routes, like the Great North Run the world's biggest half marathon stretching from Newcastle to the sea at South Shields. And, of course, there is parkrun: the free, weekly 5K that has become a true national institution. With events taking place all year round, you will always find a race to suit your schedule.

And while Britain is packed with running gems, the adventure doesn't stop at our shores 🌍. In every corner of the world there's a race made just for you, whatever your level and whatever your mood. After something gloriously different? Lace up for the riotous Marathon du Médoc 🇫🇷, run in fancy dress through the vineyards of Bordeaux with wine and oyster stops along the way 🍷. Dreaming of jaw-dropping scenery? Go and run the Great Wall Marathon along the Great Wall of China 🇨🇳, or the Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromsø, under the Norwegian midnight sun 🌙. Fancy discovering a capital at the rhythm of your own stride? The world's great cities roll out the red carpet at the Marathon de Paris 🇫🇷 — the second-largest marathon on earth, down the city's most beautiful avenues the Amsterdam Marathon 🇳🇱, the Rome Marathon 🇮🇹, the Copenhagen Marathon 🇩🇰 or the Berlin Marathon 🇩🇪, where the world record has fallen more often than anywhere else. And for the truly hooked, there's the Holy Grail: the Abbott World Marathon Majors, eight legendary races from Tokyo to New York, recently joined by the Cape Town Marathon the very first Major on the African continent. In short: from 5K to 42.195K, in the heart of the city, deep in nature or with your feet in the sand, wherever you lace up your trainers, a start line is waiting for you! 🏃✨

Whatever your favourite distance ❤️, your preparation requires careful attention. Muscle strains 🦵, knee issues, and tendinitis can all be prevented through consistent training, proper stretching, adequate hydration, and choosing the right gear (such as proper road shoes and a hydration pack). There is no reason you won't fall head over heels for this sport. Trust us: try it just once, and you'll be hooked 🌟. So, shall we meet at noon for an easy jog? 🏃
