In the Hautes-Pyrénées, where the peaks touch the sky and where cycling history is etched in golden letters ✍️, an unmissable event awaits you.
Ready to embark on the craziest cycling adventure in the Pyrenees? 😱 The GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet is reaching out to you... 🙌 With your trusty two-wheeled steed! 🚲 You will face the giants of asphalt that have tested the legs of the greatest champions 🦵. Temperatures will range between 10 and 25°C depending on the altitude. Suffice to say, you'll experience all seasons in a single day ☀️! But that’s exactly what makes it exciting, right? 😏
Hold on tight to your handlebars 💪, because this expedition is going to leave a mark on you for life! From Lourdes, a city known worldwide, you'll travel through breathtaking landscapes across the Hautes-Pyrénées. Starting from the heart of the marian city 🙏, a few warm-up kilometers, and the climb begins! 🚀 You will chain together legendary passes that have shaped the legends of the Tour de France 🇫🇷, ride on roads carved into the mountain 🪨, and maybe even find yourself in the clouds (literally) ☁️. Two challenges await you 🤷: the long course of 157 km for the absolute warriors 🦾 (with more than 4000 mD+, we’re not kidding 📊), or the medium course of 99 km for those who want to taste the legend without completely exhausting themselves (but it's still going to hurt, let's be honest 😅). The long course includes everything, featuring the Col d'Aspin (1493m) 🤪, then the CYCLING monument: the Col du Tourmalet (2115m) 🤩, which has shattered dreams and made legends since 1910! The medium course is "only" the Tourmalet 😉, but it's already more than enough to feel alive (or dead, depending on your training level 💀). Both courses will bring you back to Lourdes by a long descent followed by false flats where you'll need to collaborate with other cyclists to tackle the wind 💨!
Once you've shed all your tears during the climb 😭, it will be time to comfort yourself... and eat! 🍽️ Lourdes and the Pyrenees are the kingdom of mountain gastronomy 🧀. No unnecessary detours (you’ve had enough on your bike 🚴): here it's garbure, a thick soup that warms the soul ❤️, duck confit crispy just right 🦆, Black Bigorre pork melting in the mouth 🥩, sheep cheese from the Pyrenees 🐑, and end beautifully with a spit cake or a blueberry tart 🫐! You're not here just to suffer on two wheels 🚵 (even if it's the main program 😜). You can also discover the Sanctuary of Lourdes and its miraculous grotto 🕯️, climb to the Fortress Castle towering over the city for 1000 years 🏰, or walk at the Pont d'Espagne in the Pyrenees National Park 🌲 to see a preserved and exceptional nature 🦌. Don't forget the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2877m) with its panoramic terraces where you can see 300 km around 👀!
So, are you ready to conquer the giants of the Pyrenees? 🏔️
The starting point is from Lourdes, near the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes 🕯️.
The long route offers a series of challenges on the Pyrénées foothills ⛰️ with a series of passes between 600m and 800m in altitude 📈 during the first 60 kilometers. You will start the ascent of the Col d'Aspin at km 75, a 12km climb with an elevation gain of 800m and sections at 10%. The journey will continue to the famous Col du Tourmalet ⭐️ via the Sainte-Marie-de-Campan 🏘️ side. This ascent of 17.1km has an average gradient of 7.4% and a maximum of 11% 🫨 reaching an altitude of 2115m. The return to Lourdes consists of a 34km descent 📉 complemented by 13km of gently descending slopes.
The long route is a competition: Only those who finish the long route are eligible for category ranking, prize distribution, and podium. If you wish to compete and be ranked within your category, you must complete the long route. The top 10% of finishers in each age group qualify for the Priority Sas at every GFNY world event.
Your adventure on the non-competitive medium route is entirely dedicated to the legendary Col du Tourmalet ⛰️. You'll set off from Lourdes with the cyclists of the longer route, sharing the first 30 kilometers with them. Upon reaching Bagnères-de-Bigorre, your path diverges to head directly up the valley along the Adour 💦, towards the foot of the giant 😉.
Now you'll tackle a veritable sacred ground of cycling: the Col du Tourmalet, perched at 2115 m altitude. The climb from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan stretches over 17.1 km with a positive elevation gain of 1267 m. Get your legs ready 🦵, as the average slope is 7.4% with tough sections reaching up to 11%! 💪
Once at the top, it's time for fun with a 34 km descent followed by 13 km of slight downhills 📉. A little tip: find a group to collaborate with for this last section back to Lourdes to better tackle the headwind. 💨 Once you cross the finish line, the post-race festivities await to celebrate your achievement! 🎉
The medium route is not a competition : Cyclists on the 100 km medium route will receive their time ⏱️, but will not be ranked by finishing time. All finishing times will be listed alphabetically.
