My mistake – the name “Hopman” (from the word hop, meaning hops) sounds unbelievably Kujavian, but after all, in the Czech Republic there’s no better place for such a race than Žatec itself – the absolute world capital of hops! It’s right here, in north-western Czechia, that this wonderfully atmospheric triathlon takes place 🏊🚴🏃. Competitors can choose from several distances (including the popular sprint and the Olympic distance). The swim leg is held in the clean waters of the nearby Nechranice reservoir or in the Ohře River, and the cycling and running courses lead through rolling, picturesque terrain surrounded by green walls of hop fields 🌿.
Once you get off the bike, cross the finish line, and proudly collect your medal, Žatec will welcome you in true championship, beer-loving style:
For a walk: Your steps must head to the Chrám Chmele a Piva complex (The Temple of Hops and Beer). You can go up to the observation tower, see the unique hop astronomical clock, and feel the history of the region listed by UNESCO 🗼.
For the family: Visit the Hop Museum (Chmelařské muzeum), the largest exhibition of its kind in the world, or simply relax on the beautiful, cinematic main square (Náměstí Svobody), where dozens of historical box-office hits were filmed 🎬.
For a trip: If you want a break from the hop vibe, in just 20 minutes you can reach the charming, historic town of Kadaň to see its castle and stroll down the narrowest street in the Czech Republic (Katova ulička) 🏰.
On the plate: After burning thousands of calories under the triathlon sun, it’s time for a well-earned reward. Traditional Czech beer goulash with fluffy dumplings will recharge your energy, and quenching your thirst with original, fresh Žatecký beer straight from the tank at a local brewery is practically a must 🍻
A next-gen platform helping sports enthusiasts of all levels discover territories and heritage through races tailored to them.
