The event in a few words

Head for the legendary town of Durango, nestled in the heart of the majestic mountains of southwestern Colorado in the United States 🇺🇸. Fair warning: the thinning oxygen will turn every pedal stroke into a real ordeal as your altimeter goes haywire toward the heavens.

The ribbon of asphalt throws you into a totally insane historic duel: your one and only objective is to reach the finish line before the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train, which departs at exactly the same time as you from the valley 💨. Your steed will have to claw its way out of the Animas River gorge to climb the vertiginous ramps of the spectacular San Juan Skyway. Your mind will be put to a very severe test as you tackle two alpine monsters in succession: the dreaded Coal Bank Pass, perched above 3,200 meters, and the merciless Molas Pass, which peaks above 3,300 meters in altitude 🏔️. The frenzied cliffside descents will freeze your blood while offering you breathtaking panoramas of jagged summits.

Adrenaline saturates the icy early-morning air at this major gathering, traditionally held on the Memorial Day weekend for half a century. Forget classic pelotons—this event brings together thousands of road warriors, carried away by this surreal chase ⏱️. The cheers from the train’s passengers, winding below through the canyon, echo all the way to the peaks, pushing you to smash the pedals. A wildly authentic, Wild West-worthy atmosphere welcomes you beneath the final arch, where the dirt main street of Silverton turns into a huge fair to celebrate the survivors of this titanic showdown 🍻.

Save an ounce of life force to soak up the pioneers’ spirit once you’ve put your mount to rest. Give your battered muscle fibers the ultimate reward by riding back down the valley aboard the old wooden cars of that famous historic train, belching black smoke among the conifers 🛤️. Also steer your clan toward a mystical leap into the past by going to explore the incredible Indigenous cliff dwellings of the sublime Mesa Verde National Park, less than an hour’s drive away. Clip in to the sound of the whistle and come prove that human strength can still tame machinery! 💥
