A frosty challenge for the perfect season opener! Zuzmara Half Marathon is one of the most popular winter runs in Hungary, held in January in Budapest (zuzmara means frost or rime in Hungarian). Runners can choose the classic half marathon (21 km), as well as 10 km, 5 km, and kids’ races. The course is flat, and the crisp winter air is great motivation for a fast run 🏃❄️.
After braving the cold and earning your medal, Budapest offers a brilliant plan for winter recovery: Warm up those tired muscles in the famous thermal waters! Head to the historic Széchenyi thermal baths or Gellért – a hot soak under the open sky in wintry weather is the best thing you can do after a run ♨️. With the family, take the historic funicular railway (Sikló) up to Castle Hill, with spectacular views of the Danube and the mighty Parliament Building 🏰. Then head out for a trip to the scenic Buda Hills (Budai-hegység) and ride the famous Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút), staffed almost entirely by primary school students 🚂.
To end the day, warm up from the inside with a bowl of thick, spicy goulash soup (Gulyásleves). For something sweet, be sure to pick up hot chimney cake Kürtőskalács sprinkled with cinnamon or nuts 🍲🥐.
A next-gen platform helping sports enthusiasts of all levels discover territories and heritage through races tailored to them.
