The Trail is your Allier

Don't be fooled by its calm appearance...the Allier is a department that loves to surprise 😏. Here, no crowds, no glitz, but endless trails, forests, valleys that break the rhythm, and nature that clears your mind… and a little less so for the legs. If you're looking for an authentic, natural trail away from the hustle, welcome to the 03, the well-kept secret of central France 🇫🇷.

Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Allier is a perfect playground for lovers of nature running and trail. Between the Montagne bourbonnaise, the Sioule gorges, the banks of the Allier, and the vast state-owned forests, you'll accumulate kilometers without ever getting bored. Here, the elevation gain is often sneaky: it goes up, down, re-launches… and it stings 🔥. The Allier has about 330,000 inhabitants spread over an area of 7,300 km². Its prefecture is Moulins, former capital of the dukes of Bourbon. The department counts 317 municipalities, with main towns being Vichy, Montluçon, Moulins, Cusset, and Yzeure. Wondering what the locals are called? They are the Bourbonnais.

If trail running in the Allier is so popular, it's thanks to its preserved environment. The Montagne bourbonnaise, in the southeast of the department, is the favorite spot for trail runners: forests, paths, roots, single tracks, and unexpected panoramas 🤩. The climate is semi-continental, with well-marked seasons: perfect for running almost all year round, without the extreme heat of the south or the crowds of the Alps.

In the 03, trail running is not just a sport; it's a true culture. We don't run to show off but for the pleasure… and to test if the legs hold up 😅. The Allier is full of iconic races like the Trails chantelle sports nature, the Belle Course with Les Bougies de Charroux, the Trail des Côtes Matras, wild and hilly, or the Trail de Lavault-Ste-Anne et de Montluçon Communauté 🌲. With formats ranging from short trail to ultras.

After the effort, it's time for discovery. The Allier is rich in historical heritage like the historical center of Moulins, the thermal town of Vichy (a UNESCO site), the castle of Bourbon-l’Archambault, and the villages of Charroux and Hérisson, ranked among the most beautiful in France. And frankly, what better way to recover after a trail than a little stop at the Vichy thermal baths? 🛁 In the Allier, you'll eat very well! On the menu, you'll find the famous potato pâté, the delicious Charolais meats 🥩, the cheeses of Auvergne and, to end on a sweet note, the Vichy pastille to help ease it all down 😋. A simple, generous cuisine that warms the heart.

The Allier offers calm and wild trails, a real diversity of terrain, and races that are both friendly and well-organized. It's an underrated but demanding department, where you can enjoy the perfect combo: sports, nature, and heritage. And a little local anecdote, in this department, they often say that if you finish a trail with clean shoes... it means you got lost! Between mud, leaves, and forest paths, it's impossible to cheat 🍂.
