Set off to discover the treasures of the region: you’re bound to find what you’re looking for, whether in the city, by the lakes, or through the varied landscapes of the Alps. This is where the greatest trail runners come to race—or even to train. Among them, Mathieu Blanchard, winner of the Diagonale des Fous 2024 on the island of Réunion, Théo Détienne, winner of the Marathon du Mont-Blanc over the 90 km distance, or Baptiste Chassagne, runner-up of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc 2024 🥵. Looking for a race to discover for its landscapes, to come and cheer on the runners, or simply to challenge yourself for next season? 🗓️ Don’t panic—we’ve found you 3 trails to do at least once in your life (or to try to finish)!
Which events should you not miss in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region? Start by discovering the volcanoes of Auvergne—nothing less. Between craters, forests, and climbs ⛰️ that will make you rethink your life choices, the Volvic Volcanic Experience is a must. A whole bunch of different distances that will make you sweat 😰, but above all enjoy it, with the region’s grandiose scenery. You’ll plunge into the heart of the Chaîne des Puys in the center of the Massif Central, and yes, you have the privilege of running in a UNESCO-listed site—now that’s something ⭐️. For these races, don’t be afraid of elevation gain: between 450 mD+ and 8,400 mD+, you’ll have plenty to get your legs burning 🦵. This challenge is unique and not to be missed in the region. Next, come fulfill your dream of tackling the trails of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. Here, we’re talking legend: the UTMB is kind of the trail runner’s Holy Grail. It is very likely the most sought-after race in the world 🌍, and Kilian Jornet totally agrees, thanks to its distances, its wilderness scenery, and its prestige. 170 km of mountains, high up around Mont-Blanc, for an extraordinary challenge 🤯. Beyond this mythical distance, it’s also a week of events and trails, each crazier than the last. 6 other distances are organized during the week, so you’ve got plenty of options to take on a great challenge. If you’re not ready yet for those mountain kilometers, don’t panic: there are other “associated” or qualifying races in the region 😁. Finally, push yourself on the paths of Ampuis ⛰️. Ah, this one is for epicureans! At the Trail en Côte-Rôtie, get ready for climbs through the vineyards and descents between the vines 🍷. It’s an incredible race, emblematic of its region 🍇. The first start is in the early afternoon for the 46 km, but don’t forget your flashlight, because they’re setting you up for a night-time finish. The other participants start later on 25 km and 13 km formats, with some nice little climbs on the menu. All in all, it’s a great plan to test your cardio without having to climb to 2,000 meters of altitude! 🧭
What are the best tips to shine on the trails? ✨ You MUST do elevation, strength training, and above all, get used to running uphill and downhill (because descending stings too!). Don’t forget to do calmer sessions as well, over short distances at an easy pace, because your endurance will definitely be your best ally. Choose your shoes carefully: if you want to avoid ending up on your butt in the mud, go for a sole with good grip 👟 in all conditions. Since we all start to get a bit rusty 😬, don’t skip stretching: after each session, take 5 to 10 minutes to really loosen up (your recovery will thank you)! Logistically, plan ahead: some starts are lost in the middle of nowhere (looking at you, Cantal 😅). And above all, you need to eat well, drink well, and breathe well. In ultras, managing food and water is the key 🔑.
Why is AURA a trail runner’s paradise? ❤️ Ardèche, Savoie, Rhône, Puy-de-Dôme,... A whole string of departments that lend you their mountains to challenge yourself and push your limits. Because here, you can run on volcanoes one day, and in the Alps the next. Your eyes 👀 will thank you for coming, because the scenery will never let you down. This region is super active: you can sign up for a trail race almost every weekend, with more than 480 races per year, and you’ll enjoy a community of passionate (slightly crazy) people always ready to motivate you! Other races you shouldn’t miss either: the Asics Saintélyon, the Trail du Ventoux, the Trail des Passerelle du Monteynard, LUT By Night—anyway, you’ve got options. Even if there are probably more cows 🐄 than residents, we promise you’ll meet some great people. And of course, thanks to Finishers, you can plan your season like a true mountain strategist. In short, whether you’re here for performance or for fun, you’re going to love it.
