Calm waters at daybreak, very flat loops, wide-open spaces and shorelines stretching as far as the eye can see: lakes & ponds make for a unique running playground, halfway between performance and a stroll 💐. Ideal for chasing a time on a fast course or for getting away from the asphalt and breathing close to nature. From the small forest pond to the great Alpine lake, in France and abroad, here is our overview of the most beautiful races by the water 💧.

On the edge of a lake, asphalt gives way to a giant mirror 🪞. Still water in the early morning, a loop that hugs the shore, an open horizon all the way to the opposite bank: running around a body of water is a real pause in the calendar 💧. What makes this theme unique is the lack of a sneaky elevation trap: the route follows the shoreline, without the sly climb that breaks a leg in two 😬. France is not short of playgrounds either: Lake Der-Chantecoq, near Saint-Dizier, stretches across 4,800 hectares with 77 km of shoreline, making it one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe and a well-known stopover for common cranes 🪿. From a relaxed 10K to a technical trail, via the half, the marathon and the triathlon, every distance finds its shoreline here 🛶.

Still, beware: flat terrain can be deceiving 🌍. With no climbs to break the rhythm, your legs repeat the same stride for miles, and that regularity ends up biting into your thighs 🥵. The terrain also has its surprises: soft dirt towpaths, wooden pontoons made slippery by morning dew, stretches of sand near beaches that work the ankle far more than you'd think 😬. As for the sky, it's best to stay alert. Morning mist cools the start, the sun beats down on exposed shores at midday, and the wind sweeping across the surface slows you on one half-loop before pushing you on the other 🌬️. A cap, a bit of water, and a light windbreaker are enough to turn an exposed route into a perfectly controlled outing 👌. Calm water soothes the eye, but it’s your pace management that will make the difference over time ⏱️.

All that’s left is to choose your mirror. Lake Annecy, in Haute-Savoie, plays in the big leagues: nicknamed the “Venice of the Alps,” it’s considered one of the purest lakes in Europe, with mountain peaks as a backdrop 👀. Straddling France and Switzerland, Lake Geneva spreads out as the largest body of water in Western Europe, bordered by the Lavaux vineyards listed as a UNESCO site ⭐️. More low-key, Limousin is home to Lake Vassivière, this “little Canada” fringed with forests and clear water 😍. The Massif Central, meanwhile, multiplies ponds tucked into the hollows of volcanic landscapes, where the freshness quickly makes you forget the city 🏙️. Each shoreline brings its own vibe, from the great Alpine lake washed in light to the forest pond nestled under the trees: one watery setting, a thousand atmospheres 🧚‍♂️.

On Finishers, hundreds of waterside races await you all year round. In Haute-Savoie, the Brooks Marathon du Lac d'Annecy rolls out 42.195 km of almost flat running facing the Alps, a dream course to chase a personal best ⏱️. Trail runners prefer the Adidas TERREX Maxi-Race, which leaves the shore to climb up to Semnoz above the same lake 📸. Head to the Grand Est, where the Marathon du Lac du Der follows the dikes in solo, duo or quartet format, with a bottle of champagne at the finish 🍾. Next stop: Limousin and the Tour du Lac de Vassivière, 23 km of bucolic running paced by brass bands 🎺. At the gates of Marseille, the Course des Étangs de Marignane loops a 10K nature route along the shores of Bolmon Pond, perfect for a first outing by the water 😁.

Abroad, going around the water gains altitude and character 🥵. On Lake Geneva, the Lausanne Marathon runs along the Swiss shore and the Lavaux hillsides, while the Generali Genève Marathon brings its final kilometers back with a view of the famous Jet d'Eau ⛲️. In Italy, the Garda Trentino Half Marathon links Arco to Riva del Garda between lemon trees and turquoise waters, a route ranked among the twenty most beautiful half marathons in the world by Runner's World. In Scotland, the Loch Ness Marathon follows the most mysterious lake on the planet, the one that contains more fresh water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined 🦕. For die-hard ultra fans, Ultra X Finland strings together several days of trail around Lahti, in Scandinavia, in a country with nearly 188,000 lakes. Everywhere, the effort is then enjoyed by the water: tartiflette in Annecy, perch fillets on the quays of Lake Geneva, hunting for Nessie between two aid stations ...😋

Ready to run by the water’s edge? Choose your body of water, your format and your season! And if the call of the open sea grabs you, set course for our seaside races : same comfort, just a bit more salt 🌊.
