No one checks their watch as they cross the finish line—and that’s the whole point of the format 🙃. No ranking, no official time, no pressure on pace: just the desire to move, alone, with family, or with friends 👯. Between color runs, charity events, and festive gatherings with no sporting stakes, discover why this format appeals as much to beginners as to regulars looking for something light 🎉.

An untimed race takes place without an official ranking or individual time recording 🧘‍♀️. Walking, running, stopping to take a photo or chat with a stranger: none of that affects a result, since there simply isn’t one 😃. This idea is nothing new—quite the opposite. The ancient Olympic Games, the cradle of competitive running, were held without any time-measuring instruments: only the order of finish mattered, and sports timekeeping as we know it didn’t appear until the late 19th century ⏱️. An untimed race thus reconnects, unknowingly, with the oldest form of the discipline, where only the finish line mattered 🏁.

The absence of a stopwatch profoundly changes the relationship to effort. No need to calculate your pace per kilometer or dread the number shown at the finish: attention shifts elsewhere—to the scenery, to the other participants, to the simple pleasure of running together 💐. The real benefit, is removing the pressure to perform and keeping only that of movement, which explains why this format appeals as much to beginners intimidated by their first bib as to families coming to run across generations 🏃‍♀️.

Simplified registration formats often go along with this principle. Some events even do away with the classic bib, replaced by a simple wristband or a name list at the finish 📋. Aid stations become friendly stops rather than checkpoints to optimize, and it’s not uncommon to see participants in costume or makeup, since nothing forces you to run fast 🦸‍♀️. This freedom of pace also makes it possible to welcome very broad audiences on the same course, from the seasoned jogger to the occasional walker 🤌.

Three events illustrate this philosophy well in France 📍. No classic bib is required to start the Flo'WeRun, in Lille : participation is via a simple wristband, in support of a charitable cause, at the foot of the citadel 🏛️. Then head to Haute-Savoie for the Run & Fun du Giffre, which turns the villages of Samoëns, Taninges and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval into a huge playground over an entire weekend, with no notion of ranking at all 😮‍💨. On the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, the Prom'Classic takes the idea even further by leaving you the choice: set off in timed mode to chase a personal best, or run in free mode, with no time pressure at all ⏰.

The concept has also won over the whole planet in a different form 🌍. Born in San Francisco in 2011the Color Run spread to more than 40 countries in just a few years, gathering several million participants worldwide 😳. The principle remains unchanged wherever the event takes place: a start line dressed all in white, 5 km with no timing at all, and a shower of colored cornstarch at each kilometer covered 🌈. In the principality of Monaco, the No Finish Line offers a very different format: a 1.1 km loop open 24/7 for 8 days, where each kilometer completed earns one euro donated to charities for sick children 💝. In the United Kingdom, the Race for Life mobilizes hundreds of thousands of participants every year in support of research against cancer, over distances of 3, 5 or 10 km to be completed in peace and quiet 😌.

The post-race ritual also has a special flavor when no one is expecting a result: participants often stay grouped at the finish line, without immediately dispersing toward the posted results 🤓. The group photo replaces the rankings board, and the celebration usually continues long after the last finish 🎉.

So, ready to put your GPS watch away for once? On Finishers, you’ll find the untimed race that suits you, between major charity events and 100% chill days 🧖‍♀️. And if the idea of races without any ranking stakes still appeals to you, head to fun runs 🎊, where having a good time always takes precedence over performance.
