An ugly sweater over your technical top, a Santa hat flying in the wind, and a line of volunteers handing out mulled wine instead of the usual water 💦. December radically transforms the atmosphere of running races: the rankings take a back seat, costumes become almost mandatory, and a good portion of entry fees funds a charity rather than just a bib. Here are a few events that prove the Christmas spirit can be lived in sneakers too 🎄.

The advent calendar is being peeled away day by day, temperatures are dropping, and yet race organizers are doubling down on creativity to lure runners outside 😎. A Christmas race stands out for its scenery and its atmosphere rather than its format: illuminated decorations along the route, aid stations with festive flavors, and total tolerance for the most unlikely costumes 🧑‍🎄. The cold of December has never stopped anyone from pulling a pom‑pom beanie over their running cap 🏃‍♀️. The Santa Claus costume remains the great classic of the genre, but some editions also see reindeer, yetis, elves and even a few walking Christmas trees go by—proof that the competitive spirit gladly gives way to the spirit of celebration at this time of year 🎄. The organizers themselves often join in too, dressed up behind their aid-station stands 🤓.

Generosity almost always makes its way onto the program 📆. A good share of Christmas races donate all or part of entry fees to a charity, between medical research and support for children 💝. This solidarity dimension fits perfectly with the spirit of the month of December, when the urge to do a good deed seems to spread as easily as the string lights on building facades 🌈.

In Ollioules, a small colorful village in the Var between Toulon and Sanary, the Ollioules Christmas Trail has brought competitors together every year since 1999, over three courses ranging from 17 to 33 km, with one euro donated to the Téléthon for each entry 🎟️. In Suresnes, in the Hauts-de-Seine, the Suresnes Christmas Race strongly encourages costumes on its 2 and 5 km distances, while raising funds for the Téléthon, just a stone’s throw from the Mont Valérien memorial 🏛️. After nightfall, head to Cergy, in the Val-d'Oise, where the Raidveillon de Noël offers a 5 km night loop punctuated by mulled-wine stands and popcorn, organized by students to benefit associations in working-class neighborhoods 🙌.

The month of December also draws crowds well beyond France’s borders 🌎. In Poland, the St. Nicholas Run livens up the streets of Warsaw over 5 and 10 km, for St. Nicholas Day, celebrated with far more fervor in Central Europe than in France. Tennessee, for its part, hosts the Run Santa Run Nashville, which gets thousands of participants dressed as Santa Claus running through the streets of the world capital of country music 🤠. But the most symbolic rendezvous is probably in Lapland : in Rovaniemi, a Finnish city officially recognized as the home of Santa Claus, the Finland Arctic Wildmarathon has participants run 10, 21 or 42 km, just a few kilometers from the Arctic Circle 🐻‍❄️.

All that remains is to choose your side for the end of the year: a local bib in a city decked out with string lights, or a plane ticket to go meet the real Santa Claus in his Finnish village 🎅. If your desire to dress up doesn’t stop at the borders of December, costume races await you all year round on Finishers, to keep the party going long after the Yule log 🎂.
