Looking for your next sand race? Here you’ll find the complete calendar of races between dunes and beaches, where every stride is earned. You’re bound to find your next bib on Finishers.

Running on sand means saying goodbye to the certainties of asphalt. This discipline is unique: the ground gives way under every footstrike, and that’s precisely what makes it as demanding as it is addictive ⏳.

We’ll tell you straight: you’re going to be slow 🐌

Sand forgives nothing, and that’s exactly what draws runners looking for real sensations 🤪. Unlike asphalt—rigid and predictable—sand absorbs energy with every impact 💥. What makes this terrain so unique is its ability to multiply the effort without ever increasing the speed shown on the clock 😅. Moving on sand can require up to twice as much energy as on a stable surface, a figure that explains why so many athletes deliberately train on it to improve 🏖️. This sedimentary rock made up of fine grains born from erosion behaves differently depending on its moisture: compact and runnable near the water, but sneaky and exhausting once dry 😈. And depending on the ground texture, the sensations change 🔄. On wet sand, your stride stays crisp, almost as fast as on the road, carried by the sound of the waves and the salty air 🌊. On dry sand, on the other hand, every footstrike sinks in, the ankle twists, the calf starts burning in just a few minutes 🥵. The technical motion changes completely: the stride shortens, cadence climbs, arms work more to compensate for the instability. On a dune, the slope adds yet another difficulty: each step back almost as much as forward, a real patience game that only well-trained calves can tame without forcing it 😩.

Conditions vary hugely depending on the location📍. By the ocean, sea winds and tides set the rhythm: some races deliberately align with the tidal coefficient to benefit from firm, fast sand. In the desert, it’s a whole different story: crushing heat during the day, a brutal drop in temperatures at night, and sand that gets absolutely everywhere—including the best-sealed shoes 🏜️. A good pair of gaiters then becomes essential, as does precisely planned hydration to make the distance 💦.

In France, there’s no shortage of options to take on the joys of sand 🕺. In Normandy’s Manche department, the Enduro des Sables has participants run between Agon-Coutainville and Blainville-sur-Mer, over distances ranging from 7 km to the half marathon, with a good dose of Norman friendliness and costumes in the pack 🥳. In Vendée, the Triathlon Nature & Famille des Sables d'Olonne combines swimming, cycling, and running on Vendée’s beaches, in a setting designed for the whole family. In Brittany, the Triathlon Sables et Cap unfolds its routes between land and sea on the Dune of Fréhel, with a charity dimension benefiting the fight against multiple sclerosis 💛. Further southwest, in Lot-et-Garonne, the Course des Sables brings together the runners of Barbaste each year around a course known for its warm atmosphere 🫂. And for fans of mixed terrain, the Trail sable et forêt Patrick Fougère alternates woodland and beaches to vary the pleasures on the same course 🌳.

Internationally, one single event is enough to sum up the extreme end of the genre: the Marathon des Sables, nicknamed the toughest race in the world 🌍. Each year in early April, around 250 km are covered in six stages across the Moroccan desert, in complete food self-sufficiency, with a thermometer that climbs above 45°C during the day before dropping drastically at night when the sandman comes by 🌙. The course crosses the Errachidia region, between dunes and rocky plateaus, all the way to the finish near Ouarzazate, nicknamed the gateway to the desert 🐪. At the Marathon des Sables, the bivouac under the "khaïmas", traditional Berber tents, offers a rare moment of sharing, far from the freeze-dried meals you quickly forget when faced with a real tagine or a couscous enjoyed on your return 🍽️. On French beaches, the tradition is simpler but just as tasty: a good mussels and fries or a crêpe after the race, enjoyed with your feet still full of sand 🍹.

Running on sand means accepting starting from scratch with every stride, between raw effort and windswept landscapes 💇‍♀️. If the call of dunes and dry heat tempts you even more than beaches do, head for desert races, where sand takes on a whole other dimension, between vastness and TOTAL isolation ❌.
