At the Heart of the Citadels

Head to Ariège for the Trail des Citadelles, a tough challenge around Lavelanet in the heart of Occitanie. Four distances await you: 10 km, 24 km, 40 km and 70 km with plenty of elevation to conquer.

The route takes you through streams, forests and perched villages, with a 100% Ariège atmosphere. You will tackle rocky passages, challenging ascents and rolling sections where you can finally pick up the pace.

An authentic, tough, and beautiful trail. Ready to take it on? ⛰️🔥

Forget your stopwatch, it's the mountain that sets the pace!

If you think that trail running is just about running on well-groomed paths, Ariège will quickly set you straight. Here, in department 09, the word "flat" has been banned by geological decree to make way for a raw verticality that demands humility 📉. This land of character nestled against Spain and Andorra, this corner of Occitanie doesn't pretend: it's wild, real, where each kilometer is earned by the sweat of your brow and where you will discover a new definition of effort 🔥.

From Cathar castles to sky-touching peaks

Let me set the scene for your future athletic feats with a little time travel. Ariège is a true open-air museum, home to famous prehistoric caves like Niaux or the Mas-d'Azil, a unique geological curiosity in Europe crossed by a road and soon by your strides 🔦. With its 4,890 km² of troubled terrain, this area is a land of historical resistance where every stone tells a story. By embarking on a nature race, you will follow the "paths of the Bonshommes", those escape routes of the Cathars towards the château of Montségur, perched on its pog like a challenge to gravity 🏰. It's in this mystical setting that you'll understand the true definition of elevation 📈, from the plains of Pamiers to peaks over 3,000 meters like the Pique d'Estats, the roof of the department 🧗.

A southern French environment where the bear reigns (and you're the guest)

Think you have mental strength? Wait until you encounter the unpredictable mountain climate and the soul of the Ariègeois. Here, we have a singing accent, we still use a few Occitan words, and we are stubborn, a bit like the "Cap de burro" (donkey's head), the affectionate symbol of the region 🐴. By checking the trail calendar, you'll see that most of the courses wind through the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park, a preserved biodiversity sanctuary 🌿. Keep an eye out, as you're running in the territory of the chamois, capercaillie, and brown bear, whose presence still sparks much debate 🐻. It is a mountain race without filter, far from sanitized paths, where nature reclaims its rights and demands absolute respect 🙇.

Sweat, cheese, and local legends

After expending all your energy on the slopes, you'll need to recharge, and Ariège's gastronomy is here for that. Forget strict dieting and dip your spoon into an Azinat, the traditional cabbage stew, or a Mounjetado, the local cassoulet that will propel you to finish your ultra 🥘. As for celebrities, did you know that the great Fabien Barthez was born in Lavelanet? ⚽️ If you have as much reflex on technical footwork as he does guarding his goals, you'll avoid roots without a problem ⚽. Speaking of athletes! Impossible to talk about this land without thinking of the warriors of the "Challenge du Montcalm", a legendary event where the world's best skyrunners come to measure themselves against the rock, and where the atmosphere at the peak is literally electric ⚡.

Essential events to test your cardio

Now, let's get serious with the gems we have selected for you on Finishers. If you want to enter the legend, the Trail des Citadelles is the ultimate grail, offering a historical crossing of Cathar castles with mud that has become its trademark 💩. For crazy climbers, the Marathon du Montcalm is a must, a true race in Ariège vertical that allows no weakness 📉. Prefer a postcard setting? The Trail du Pic des 3 Seigneurs offers you 360-degree panoramas that will make you cry with joy (and fatigue) 😍. Don't forget the Dent d'Orlu, this iconic peak that stares you down, or the Trail des Crêtes, perfect for those who love running on the edge with the void as a companion 🦅. It's time to stop dreaming and book a bib to write your own story on these lands of courage 🎫.
