Race timing in Rouen

It’s the question we all ask ourselves: how long does each participant take to complete their race? 🤔 That’s what timing is all about—measuring the time from start to finish to establish the rankings. Long done with a handheld stopwatch, it’s now electronic ⏱️. Chips attached to the bib, shoe, or bike are automatically detected on the ground as participants pass. Concretely, this system relies on timing mats equipped with RFID antennas, placed on the ground at the start line, finish line, and intermediate checkpoints: each chip emits a unique frequency captured to the nearest thousandth of a second, ensuring flawless ranking accuracy. It’s also thanks to this that we distinguish official time (calculated from the starting signal) from real time, which only starts when you cross the line—very handy when you start at the back of the pack!

So, in practical terms, what does that look like?
