Race timing in Montpellier

This is the question we all ask ourselves: how long does each participant take to complete their race? 🤔 That’s the whole point of timing, which measures the time from start to finish to establish the rankings. Long done with a handheld stopwatch, it is now electronic ⏱️. Chips attached to the bib, shoe, or bike are automatically detected on the ground as athletes pass. In practice, this system relies on timing mats equipped with RFID antennas, placed on the ground at the start line, finish line, and intermediate checkpoints: each chip emits a unique frequency captured down to the millisecond, ensuring rankings with impeccable accuracy. It’s also thanks to this that we distinguish official time (calculated from the start signal) from real time, which only starts when you cross the line—very handy when you start at the back of the pack!

In practical terms, what does that look like?

Montpellier and its surroundings provide a great example. The Montpellier Run Festival is the showcase 🎉: every spring, the village set up on the Promenade du Peyrou welcomes nearly 15,000 runners over a full weekend, with a 5K, a 10K, a half marathon, a relay Ekiden, kids’ races, and an FFA-certified marathon, laid out in two 21.1 km loops through the Écusson, Antigone, and the City Hall. NeuroRun - Montpellier sets the tone with a charity, non-timed race 🏃: two distances accessible to everyone, 5.5 km and 11 km, where what matters isn’t the clock but the funds raised for research into Alzheimer’s disease. These events trust us with managing their registrations. It’s this reliability that reassures organizers and secures every result, race after race 💪.
