What is the 10K world record?

What is the 10K world record? On the road and on the track, we break down the times and paces.

10K road world record: who put the turbo on? 🛣️

For men, the benchmark time bears the signature of Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha: 26’31”, clocked on February 16, 2025 at the Facsa 10K in Castellón de la Plana. That morning, he’s chasing Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto’s 26’24” and crosses the line disappointed, seven seconds too slow. Twist: Kipruto’s time has since been annulled, and World Athletics has ratified Kejelcha’s as the new world record ⏱️ .

A little anecdote that stings: on the same day, a few minutes after finishing, Kejelcha loses his world record in the half-marathon, beaten by Jacob Kiplimo in Barcelona. A roller-coaster Sunday.

On the women’s side, Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich reigns with 28’46”, set on January 14, 2024 at the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, in Valencia. She becomes the first woman under 29 minutes on the road 10K. Expert nuance: this time was set in a mixed race, where men act as pacers.

Between Valencia and Castellón, the Spanish coast looks like a record orchard 🍊: flat courses, mild winters, luxury pacers. To make your head spin, Kejelcha holds 2’39” per km, i.e. 22.6 km/h, while Ngetich swallows each kilometer in 2’53”, around 20.9 km/h.

10,000 m on the track: 25 laps without letting up 🏟️

On the oval, the distance is called the 10,000 m, i.e. 25 laps of the track to run in circles… very fast. Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei holds the record there in 26’11”00, on October 7, 2020 in Valencia. He then erased Kenenisa Bekele’s 26’17”53, which had stood since 2005.

For women, Kenyan Beatrice Chebet strikes on May 25, 2024 in Eugene, at the Prefontaine Classic: 28’54”14, the first woman under 29 minutes on the track. She thus dethrones Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey and her 29’01”03. Does the name ring a bell? Chebet also collects records over 5 km.

Note the paradox: for men, the track beats the road by 20 seconds, whereas for women, the road keeps the advantage (28’46” versus 28’54”14). The pacing effect of mixed races still weighs in the balance.

A tricolor nod to finish: Jimmy Gressier wins the 10,000 m world title in Tokyo in 2025, ahead of a certain Yomif Kejelcha 🥇.

What time should you aim for in your 10K? 🎯

Good news: your personal best has nothing to envy anyone. A few reference points to place yourself: 1h for 10K equals 6’ per km (10 km/h), 50 minutes equals 5’ per km (12 km/h), 40 minutes equals 4’ per km (15 km/h).

Less explosive than the 5K, the 10K is run at around 85 to 90% of your VMA. The trap? Going out too fast, then suffering between the 6th and 8th kilometer, when the legs feel heavy and the mind wavers. Start cautiously, save some juice for the final sprint 💪 .

In training, focus on long intervals (1,000 m, 2,000 m), a threshold session, and an easy long run each week. Terrain-wise, aim for a flat, fast course in the 10K race calendar. A 5K in preparation will sharpen your speed, before aiming further with the half-marathon.

Your turn to bite into those ten kilometers! 🏅

Kejelcha, Ngetich, Cheptegei and Chebet have pushed the limits of the 10K. Your time is built session after session, until race day. Choose your race according to your level, book your bib on Finishers, and head to the start line 🏁 .
