The Grand Raid de La Réunion is so technical because of its volcanic terrain: rocks, mud, roots, and rivers, without respite. Add to that steep slopes, the crossing of the three cirques (Mafate, Cilaos, Salazie) and significant temperature variations. The result is a more demanding ground than UTMB.
