Three marathons, a world record, and an absolute legend.

Born on December 2, 1999 in Eldoret in Kenya, Kelvin Kiptum is a true comet in the history of running. A former shepherd from the central highlands, he long held the ultimate grail of the marathon with a stratospheric time of 2 hours and 35 seconds. Tragically gone on February 11, 2024 at the age of 24 in a car accident with his coach, his legacy will remain etched forever🕊️.

The child of the Rift Valley who set the asphalt on fire!🔥

You’re wondering how you become a legend in just a few months?🤔 Forget the classic playbook. Unlike the immense Kenyan champions who grind it out on the track for years, the prodigy from the Rift Valley almost completely skipped the track 🏟️. Lacking resources at the start, he trained nonstop on the dirt paths of his village of Chepsamo and near Kaptagat 🇰🇪. Coached by Rwandan Gervais Hakizimana, he withstood a superhuman workload of 220 to 280 km per week. To build his résumé, there was no magic recipe—just sweat and steel determination 💪.

A meteoric rise in three acts!🚀

Ready for takeoff? ✈️In just three official outings over the iconic distance, the athlete redefined the limits of the marathon for onlookers🤯. On December 4, 2022, he dropped a resounding 2 hours 1 minute and 53 seconds at the Valencia Marathon in Spain 🇪🇸. It’s simply the best time in history for a debut over a marathon format. A few months later, on April 23, 2023, he crushed the competition on the course of the prestigious London Marathon in the United Kingdom with a time of 2 hours 1 minute and 25 seconds. His tactical signature relied on unbelievably brutal “negative splits,” where he ran the second half of the race far faster than the first⚡.

The world record for eternity!🌟

The pinnacle of his very short career came on October 8, 2023🏆. That day, marathon history shifted on the ultra-fast course of the Chicago Marathon in the United States 🇺🇸. With a devastating surge after the 30th kilometer, Kelvin Kiptum brought down the record in 2 hours and 35 seconds⏱️. He became the first man under the mythical barrier of 2 hours and 1 minute, obliterating the previous mark held by Eliud Kipchoge by 34 seconds 🥇. The whole world was waiting to see him smash the two-hour wall at the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, fate decided otherwise: he died tragically on February 11, 2024 in a devastating road accident. It took only eighteen months for this 24-year-old prodigy to break the game: the mark left by Kelvin Kiptum permanently redrew the limits of the marathon 🏃‍♂️.

Just before his passing, the Kenyan had only one obsession in mind: achieving what no one has ever done. While his great rival Eliud Kipchoge did run under two hours during a private, non-ratified challenge in 2019, Kiptum wanted to be the very first to break that mythical wall in an official race at the Rotterdam Marathon. This absolute record, followed by a highly anticipated duel at the Paris Games, was meant to crown the new king 👑. In fact, it was by following in his footsteps that Sabastian Sawe finally achieved the unthinkable in 2026, becoming the first man in history to finish an official marathon in under two hours.

Destiny deprived him of that ultimate feat, but his audacity truly redefined the realm of what’s possible.
