The event in a few words

So, you need to picture a course that’s flat, VERY flat ✨. Forget killer elevation gain, mountain switchbacks, or suffocating altitude ❌. Here we’re heading to Illinois City, right in the heart of Cook County, to cook take on the legendary Bank of America Chicago Marathon 🏆. This monument (if the word is representative enough) of running has been a prominent member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors since 2006, of the World Marathon Majors Qualifiers but also of the Boston Marathon qualifiers 🏃‍♂️. WHEW, that one’s a big deal! It’s scheduled in October with a program that’s, at the very least, pretty efficient 👌. One flagship distance—the queen of running: 42.195 km. Not a centimeter more or less, on asphalt so flat you’d think it was smoothed with an iron 🤣. It’s simple: with only a few meters of variation, it’s the ideal playground for a stratospheric performance 🚀. And for those who want to soak up the atmosphere without going all-in, you can also line up for the Chicago 5K, with the start given the morning before ☕️.

What’s more, the route is a true love letter to the “Windy City” 💌. The start and finish take place with great fanfare at Grant Park : the city’s green lung 🌳. Very quickly, you’ll set off on a breathtaking urban loop, filled with straight lines that cut through no fewer than 29 neighborhoods steeped in history 📖, and also the lakeshore 😉. On this course, the expertise lies in pure speed: this is where history is written ⚡️. Like in 2023, when Kelvin Kiptum set the men’s marathon world record in 2h 00min 35s. Yes, yes—he really ran the 42.195 km in 2 hours; you’re not dreaming… 🙀 But that’s not all, because Ruth Chepngetich in 2024 set the women’s world record, in Chicago at 2h 9min 57s 😳. You get it: it’s basically the Fast & Furious of marathons ⏱️. In total, 4 world records have been set on this course (including those of the men’s and women’s wheelchair racers) 👩‍🦽. And since the course changes very little—or not at all—it’s probably not about to stop ... 🌟

So yes, this marathon hosts records galore, but that also makes it a very accessible marathon 🙌. With so little elevation, anyone can come test themselves on these typical American streets. But that’s not all: Chicago is also a cultural immersion worthy of a Scorsese film or the Blues Brothers 🤝. Along the course, you’ll run through areas with strong identities like Greek Town, Little Italy, Pilsen, or Chinatown 🇨🇳. Yes, on top of being in the United States, you’re also taking a little “world tour” in sneakers! 🌎 Since over there it’s always more, when it comes to atmosphere, you’ll be carried by an unforgettable fervor 📣. Imagine: 1.7 million spectators screaming your name, DJs on every corner, and American-style hospitality 🇺🇸. At this rate, you’ll start feeling like the star of the Super Bowl 🏉. And to get a bit more serious again, between two dreams strides 🏃‍♀️, you’ll admire the avant-garde architecture born from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 🏗️.

For companions—or for your finisher legs (if they’re still working 🤥) after the effort—the city is full of gems ⭐️. Yes, with all that, you almost forget the magical place where this competition takes place 📍. Chicago isn’t somewhere you find yourself every day 🙃. You can stroll near the Buckingham Fountain ⛲️, say hi to the “Bean” (Cloud Gate), or clear your head facing the vastness of Lake Michigan 🪷. Watch your neck—it’s going to start aching with the sheer number of skyscrapers of outsized scale all around you 👀. Once you’ve got the medal around your neck, don’t forget to pick up the many goodies reserved for you 🎁. It’s well known that over there, when you’re a marathon finisher 🏅, if you walk around with your medal, you can score loads of freebies. So here’s a tip: do your homework on Chicago’s merchants—you could get donuts, cookies, beers, tacos… 🌮 And all of it for free! Well, almost, because you’ll still be down a pair of legs 🤕.

So, ready to smash your records in the Windy City? See you in Chicago-go-goooo 💨

A few more words

From Grant Park to ... Grant Park, at least you shouldn’t get lost! 😂

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is known for blowing you away and creating unforgettable memories 💭. To arrive as well-prepared as possible and know when to kick the engine back into gear, let us tell you more about the course:

It all starts in the heart of the green lung of the city, on Columbus Drive. Right from the start, you’re plunged into the vastness of America as you take off among the skyscrapers 🏙️. A first loop takes you north, crossing the Chicago River via LaSalle Street and then running alongside Lake Michigan on Sheridan Road : the atmosphere in the Lincoln Park and Lake View East neighborhoods will give you goosebumps! Take advantage of it to hydrate well at the first aid stations (water and nutrition on the menu) 💦.

Then you head back down toward the legendary Loop (the business district 💸) before setting your sights west on Adams Street. Just before this little detour, you might hear quite a racket: it’s obviously the Bank of America Cheer Zone. The city’s most die-hard supporters are packed in here to cheer on the heroes of the day 🗣️. You’ll see—it’s sometimes more effective than any kind of gel or electrolytes. Once your batteries are recharged, you’ll pass through Greektown and Little Italy, places where history and culture blend into one. You’ll run right by the universities and the Charity Block Party, which will keep the atmosphere at its peak 🎉. And if you ever feel the atmosphere isn’t everything: you’ll come across two Maurten Zones between km 25 and km 30. Yes, yes, you understood correctly—the km 30 wall will go unnoticed with all these activities 😳.

At the end of Jackson Boulevard, you’ll turn around and head south at Damen Avenue. That’s the last big stretch! You’ll cross the iconic Chinatown neighborhood via Wentworth Avenue before going to find the lowest point of the course around 35th Street. That’s usually when your legs start to burn, but the Biofreeze Pain Relief Zone will be there to ice your muscles before the final sprint 🥶.

Once you’re on Michigan Avenue, all that’s left is to grit your teeth as you head back north. You’ll be able to proudly raise your arms as you cross the finish line again at Grant Park, right next to the Museum Campus. Well done, champ—you’ve tamed one of the 6 world monuments of running! 🫡🏅
