"Ponerse las pilas"! You might hear this phrase if you choose to participate in the Lanzarote Marathon held in Spain ๐ช๐ธ, in the splendid setting of the Canary Islands๐ค. The translation is quite simple: "get a move on" and shift into high gear! ๐ You're wondering why you're being told this? Well, because there's every chance you'll be distracted by the spectacular scenery unfolding before you! Located on the island of Lanzarote, the most easterly of the 7 Canary Islands, the Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon offers 3 races, one of which is also open to wheelchairs ๐. So lace up your sneakers because we're taking you to traverse the volcanic rock ๐ and magma that covers this breathtaking island! ๐ฎ
The seafront ๐ is actually the setting where you'll be running! Skirting the seafront of the 4 municipalities of Costa Teguise, Arrecife, San Bartholomรฉ and Puerto del Carmen, you'll see the Spanish coastline beaches ๐ (more than 26 km of beaches on this island alone! ๐ฎ), the azure water, the sun ๐, and the caves and cliffs carved during the Timanfaya eruption. On foot or in a wheelchair (only for the half marathon), the road will be entirely yours since it's been privatized for the event. You'll then be able to fully enjoy the spectacular sight ๐๏ธ of the Telamon wreck ๐ข that's been sitting for 40 years in the middle of the bay, as well as the passing planes โ๏ธ a few dozen meters overhead ๐. Indeed, Lanzarote's airport located at the end of the track will allow you to observe the relentless ballet of planes... A race promising to be unique and atypical, isn't it? ๐ฌ
For a bit of history, the island of Lanzarote, nicknamed "the island of 1,000 volcanoes", is home to the Timanfaya, located in the middle of a huge natural park bearing its name ๐. And that's not all the volcano marked in the history of the Canaries! ๐ฅ In 1730, the volcano erupted and poured a colossal amount of lava for over 6 years, covering 3/4 of the island with magma ๐ฅ. The result is a stunning landscape blending aridity, desert, sandy beaches, underground cavities, cacti, lush vegetation, vineyards, and volcanic craters ๐คฉ. So if you want to recharge after the racing euphoria, you can always enjoy the silence and lunar ambiance ๐ of the island. A moderate tourism that allows the inhabitants of Charco del Palo to be themselves... in their naturist village ๐ซฃ. After all, no judgments! ๐ We'd probably do the same in their place given the island's optimal weather conditions (19ยฐ in December ๐)!
Designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO ๐, Lanzarote offers rich and wild fauna and flora. It is notably known to be a leading birdwatching site and for its numerous cacti and other endemic species ๐. Moreover, if you love cacti ๐ต, you can always visit the garden which hosts more than 1,400 species (but be careful where you step ๐ ). Besides that, you can also traverse the numerous palm groves ๐ด on the island as well as its unique vineyards ๐. So don't hesitate to grab a bottle when you go to bask in the Spanish sun Spain ๐ช๐ฆ, with your feet in the Atlantic Ocean ๐ท๐. Additionally, you can admire some of the 300 craters ๐คฏ on the island after your race. Careful! โ ๏ธ While kids will love it, you'll need to keep them under control as temperatures can get very high ๐ฅต (but don't worry, experienced guides will tell you everything you need to know). Some have even managed to exploit these geysers of heat, like the famous restaurant "El Diablo" which grills its dishes over a volcanic chimney. Tempting, isn't it? You who dreamed of having a barbecue in the Christmas season! ๐ข๐ .
Finally, you'll discover that Lanzarote's cultural ๐ and historical heritage is not to be missed! You'll meet Cรฉsar Manrique, the island's most popular native โญ๏ธ. This painter ๐งโ๐จ, sculptor, and architect managed to enhance the island's image thanks to his bold and visionary works, such as the Mirador del Rio and his foundation ๐. An oasis that blends nature, art, history, sport, culture, oenology, and gastronomy in a region preserved from it all...
What more could you want? Oh yes, go look at some photos, it's worth the detour ๐.
The marathon of Lanzarote is the biggest challenge of the competition, but you will never have felt like making so little effort! ๐ With a flat terrain ๐, by the seaside and mild weather, you will surely enjoy this sunbath and iodized scent ๐. Starting at "Sands Beach Resort", in front of the hotel bearing this name, you will run a loop that will take you to "Avenida de Las Playas" in Puerto del Carmen, 21 km away, before returning to your starting point. Meanwhile, you will have the chance to run along the sandy beaches of the island's coastline ๐. The 8 refreshment points planned along your route will give you a few minutes to admire the waves crashing on the volcanic rocks ๐.
Accessible for wheelchair users or simply on foot, the Semi-Marathon of Lanzarote offers a route similar to that of its big brother, the 42 km. Except this time, the start is at "Avenida de Las Playas" in Puerto del Carmen and leads you to the same finish point as the others: the "Sands Beach Resort" ๐. So if you were still hesitating, stop! With its parasport route and magnificent setting, the 21 km of the competition is made for you... With a nice reward at the end for the top 3 finishers ๐๐ฐ.
Starting at "Rumba Medular", near Ferreteria Tias in Arrecife, the 10 km race is the most accessible for shy finishers who want to exercise while enjoying an exceptional setting ๐คฉ. Benefiting from the seaside, views of the beaches, boats, and a flat course, you can enjoy everything the island has to offer... All in optimal weather conditions! ๐
