Odin lost an eye to gain supreme wisdom 👁️... you're going to gain running experience on his former playground 🏃.
At the end of May, take your best pair of road shoes and head to Denmark 🇩🇰 in the country's third city: Odense. No Valhalla on the program, but 21.1 km on the sacred grounds of the Scandinavian god of war ⚔️. Odense literally means "the sanctuary of Odin" 🏛️. Legend has it that after leaving Asgard (the realm of the gods), Odin settled on the island of Odinsey, the former name of the region of Funen 🏝️. So, when you run in Odense, you tread on a mythical land, literally, where a god is said to have established his earthly sanctuary. Weather-wise 🌤️, it's perfect at this time in Denmark: between 15 and 20°C on average, with long days (the sun sets around 9:30 pm 🌅). So you have no excuse!
The Odense City Half consists of 4 races for 4️⃣ different audiences, and we're going to detail all of them because it's important to know what you're getting into 📋, just like the Andersen tales, native to the city. Fun for kids 👦, or downright scary? 😱 Well, for the Semi-Marathon 🏃, we're going long, a bit like Frozen. The course is a loop 🔄 in the heart of Odense ❤️, between historic center streets 🏛️, green spaces 🌳, and urban atmosphere 🏙️. Don't worry, you won't look like Olaf ☃️, promised! For the 10 km, it's more like the Steadfast Tin Soldier🪖. It's not the longest distance, but you still need to stay focused and determined 💪. There's also a 5 km if you feel the other distances are too much, or if you want to smash your record on a short distance. It's like the race for Thumbelina, short but full of twists 🤙. Enough to be proud of yourself at the end!
Of course, let's not forget our little kids, the Nightingales 👶. They also have a 2.5 km race with a medal awarded 🏅. The little champions ages 5 to 14 🧒 can let loose on a safe and secured course 🛡️, and trust us, watching them cross the finish line with their medals 🥇, it's heartwarming 💙.
After discovering the city by running, you can discover it... by eating! 😜 Denmark is the kingdom of smørrebrød. You’ll also be able to taste the famous Danish pastries 🥐 (the real ones, the ones that inspired the "danishes" found worldwide 🌍), frikadeller (meatballs 🍖), and flæskesteg (crispy roast pork). For culture enthusiasts, the Danish Railway Museum 🚂 (Jernbanemuseum) showcases about twenty real old locomotives and coaches 🚊, with royal coaches 👑 and a snowplow locomotive from 1869 ❄️. The Saint-Knud Cathedral ⛪, the first saint of Danish history 🇩🇰, is worth the visit with its 54-meter bell tower 🗼 and carved wooden doors 🚪 (plus, it's free 🐀). The Odense Zoo 🦁 is considered one of the best in Europe 🌍 and if you need a bit of magic 🪄, just 30 km away, the castle of Egeskov 🏰 from the 16th century is waiting for you! 🫵
So, run to write your own tale in the footsteps of the Scandinavian mythology gods. Who knows, you might achieve your PR? 😉
