Races in Royan

Start your Royan adventure by fueling up at the central market (shaped like a scallop shell) — it’s a city must-see. It’s located at the end of Boulevard Aristide Briand, designed to look like an arrowhead, in remembrance of the world wars that the city fell victim to. Just a few steps from there, you can discover the surprising Notre-Dame-de-Royan Church, as well as Saint-Pierre Church. Then go rest your legs by visiting the Royan museum, located in the historic Pontaillac district. This neighborhood was spared during historical events, and you’ll be able to admire splendid villas and luxury homes. After that, head to Saint-Suplice-de-Royan, a small town 7 km inland, where you can visit a Protestant temple whose shape and neo-Romanesque architecture will blow you away (it’s one of France’s four octagonal temples) ! 

You’d almost forget we’re by the sea, right? Promise, you’re in for a treat! (as long as it’s not sea salt in your eyes, it’s fine 😂). We know it’s always tricky to find a beach that checks all our boxes, so we’ll share a few addresses. Grande-Conche Beach is the most well-known. Located downtown, it stretches along the entire west coast of the city — ideal for a morning jog with your feet in the water! For a beach with a beautiful view, we recommend Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, nestled between Pointe de Vallières and Pointe du Suzac. If that still doesn’t suit you (you’re starting to get picky), then head straight to Chay Beach with its cliffs, located along the Côte d’Argent promenade. 

In Royan, you can’t miss the Devil’s Bridge (okay, it’s in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer) — it’ll be a chance for you to learn a bit more about the legend behind its creation; we won’t say any more! On your jog, stop by the Puits de l’Auture, carved out by the sea over the years (just be careful not to fall in!). They’re close to the Customs Officers’ Path, where you can keep running. The highlight? The legendary fishing huts on stilts (Cabanes à Carrelets) just a stone’s throw away... For a stunning panoramic view of the ocean, go to the Estuary Park, perched on a cliff near the Gironde estuary. From there, take a boat and set off to discover the Cordouan Lighthouse, which happens to be the oldest in France.

What, boats aren’t your thing? In that case, keep your sneakers on and go for a solid run along Royan’s canals — your choice between the Marais de Pousseau, Boube, or Rivaud canal. If you’re brave, you can even reach Sète (thanks to the Canal of the Two Seas). To breathe in fresh nature air, train around Lake La Métairie or Enlias, or head all the way to the Coubre National Forest to prepare for your next trail !
