Rome below, the 4000s all around

Rome of the Alps surrounded by 4,000-metre peaks, Aoste blends the Arch of Augustus, an ancient theatre and trails that climb toward Mont Blanc. The trail capital is waiting for you ⛰️

Aoste has two thousand years on the clock. Founded by Rome, it has kept its Arch of Augustus, its Roman theatre and its grid plan: the Rome of the Alps, an open-air heritage site 🏛️. All around, the peaks seal off the horizon, from Mont Blanc to Grand Paradiso 🏰. Running in Aoste: Roman cobblestones underfoot, a granite wall as far as the eye can see. Few cities offer this contrast—an ancient forum nestled in the hollow of a snow cirque.

The city sits on the valley floor at 580 metres, but the paths rise immediately toward the alpine pastures and passes. Pila, the resort perched above Aoste, can be reached on foot via a steep climb that sets your thighs on fire 💪. Higher up, the balconies of trail running in the Aosta Valley run opposite the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, on trails made for climbing. Flat, here, is an illusion 🌄.

The mountains call the shots all year round. In summer, you set off early before the storm, in the air scented with larches and the blue of high-altitude lakes ❄️. In autumn, the slopes blaze; in winter, snow gives the city back to skiers and cross-country skiers. Spring reopens the lower trails, when the torrents swell 🌲. The high passes, Grand-Saint-Bernard first among them, reopen later, once the altitude is cleared of snow. The mountain reigns everywhere—the area's signature theme—and the race calendar in Aoste follows the snowmelt.

The valley lives for trail running. The Tor des Géants, 330 kilometres and 24,000 metres of climbing around the giants, remains a monument of ultra 🏔️. The Ultramarathon du Fallère heads due south along Aoste's balconies, and the RunThrough Pila-Aoste links the city to its resort in June. Further afield, the Aosta Valley page opens onto Courmayeur, Cogne and Grand Paradiso. After the effort: a fontina fondue, a square of Arnad lard, a glass of génépi (Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health; consume in moderation) 🧀. Federico Pellegrino, an Olympic medal-winning cross-country skier, grew up on these slopes; Anselm of Aoste, a philosopher who became a saint, was born here in the 11th century 🎿. It's up to you to aim for: an ultra-trail for the legend, a marathon or a gentler outing depending on your legs.
