Running on a (extinct, promise) volcano

Welcome to the Canaries’ land of fire, a volcanic rock set in the Atlantic opposite Africa. Lava fields, vines in ash, the world’s toughest Ironman: in Lanzarote, things heat up 🌋.

Set your course for the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Africa, on the easternmost of the Canary Islands. Lanzarote lays out its white houses with green shutters, its fields of black lava and its three hundred craters—everything listed as a biosphere reserve 🔥. The island is organized around seven municipalities: Arrecife, the port capital; Teguise, the former capital with its Sunday market; Tías, home to Puerto del Carmen; Yaiza, at the gates of Timanfaya; San Bartolomé, in the center. Farther north, Haría hides its valley of a thousand palm trees, while La Graciosa plays the part of the little wild island. This is the backdrop for your running races in Lanzarote, between basalt desert and turquoise seafront.

The playground looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. The Timanfaya National Park raises its fire mountains, a 100% volcano setting that few places can offer. In the center, the vines of La Geria dip into ash hollows, sheltered by their low stone walls, and produce a malvasia that smells of basalt 🍷. To the northwest, the great beach of Famara stretches beneath its cliff battered by the surf, the surfers’ kingdom 🌊. Up in the sky, the island runs on sunshine all year round, as dry as tinder, with the trade winds blowing like the boss 💨. You run in the warmth while Europe freezes, and you quickly learn to deal with the wind—your free training partner that pushes you or holds you back depending on its mood. No wonder endurance sports have made this rock their laboratory.

Time for bibs, from triathlon to privatized tarmac. The Lanzarote Marathon follows the sea in December, from Costa Teguise to Puerto del Carmen, on closed roads where the wreck of the Telamon and planes coming in to land roll by 🏃. Every May, the Ironman Lanzarote strings together 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and a marathon, reputed to be the toughest on the planet because of the wind and heat 🚴. For a shorter format, the Ocean Lava Lanzarote blends swimming and effort along the Atlantic shore 🏊. Want trails? Jump to a sister island: the Transgrancanaria crosses Gran Canaria at night. The Tenerife Bluetrail, meanwhile, climbs toward Teide. That’s your race in the Canaries, from volcanic sand to the waterline.

This place breeds tough cookies. The local Ironman is considered the most merciless on the circuit, and in 2026 the Frenchman Sam Laidlow smashed the record there in 8:03, while Britain’s Lucy Charles-Barclay, who trains on the island, won at home. Culturally, Lanzarote bears everywhere the signature of César Manrique, the local artist who sculpted the island: low white houses, a cactus garden, lava caves turned into concert halls 🌵. The writer José Saramago, a Nobel Prize winner, had also set down his suitcases in Tías. The heritage plays the fire card: Timanfaya where meat is still grilled on the heat of the ground, the tunnels of the Cueva de los Verdes, the Santa Bárbara castle that once watched for pirates. After the effort, you mash papas arrugadas in their red mojo, bite into a punchy goat cheese, and wash it all down with a vintage born in ash. And in Timanfaya, it’s the dromedaries that take you for a ride 🐫.

So, ready to play with fire? Beginners treat themselves to the 5K or 10K facing the sea, road runners target the marathon or half, triathletes take on the Ironman monster or the Ocean Lava, and trail lovers head to a sister island. Open the running race calendar of the archipelago, choose your dose of lava, then go for it: in Lanzarote, it’s going to heat up 🤙.
