The Alps Marathon is an event to definitely mark on your race calendar of the year! ✍️ Why? Simply because it's a unique alpine marathon, a road race set in one of France's most exotic settings! 😮 Taking place in mid-May (and as the saying goes "In May, do what you like"), it's the perfect opportunity to have a little sports getaway in Savoie, in the mountainous region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes ⛰️, and to discover the 5th edition of the gem of Savoyard marathons! 😋 At the heart of the Tarentaise Valley and starting from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the route promises to be magnificent 🤤 and will allow you to cross several typical Savoyard villages from the area. But hold on! Let's not put the cart before the horse, maybe you should decide which course you want to take part in first, right? 🤔
Let me tell you, the organizers have more than one trick up their sleeve. They have planned distances adapted to everyone (yes yes, truly everyone ✅)! It's impossible not to find a race that suits your stride when you see the menu: a marathon, a half marathon, a 10 km, a solidarity walk and a 5 km. The 10 km race is also open and adapted for para sports. Plus, the organizers have planned preferential rates for groups as well as clubs. Deal of the century, right? Well, we'll wait for the bar until after the race, although it's essential to stay hydrated during an effort 🤪.
In short, let's talk about the course 🤓. Again, the organization has spared no expense and it's enticing 😍. You will venture on a course with a mountainous flavor that will surprise you. From the start, you'll launch near the famous Bourg-Saint-Maurice funicular 🚠. No, not to gain altitude, but to race for a few kilometers on asphalt before reaching the greenway towards the town of Villaroger Federer. You'll then take a magnificent bike path, regardless of the distance you choose. It will lead you (still running or walking, not cycling 😜) through the lush avenues of the Tarentaise Valley 🏞️. Along the banks of the Isère, you'll progress through bucolic country roads and will have several small descents to catch your breath. But be careful, your focus and especially your preparation will be crucial: the course will be hilly, with hills challenging your calves 📈. But rest assured, you won't even notice given the enchanting and lush scenery that will surround you! 😇
If you have some energy left 🔋, take advantage of the outdoor activities the region offers: rafting, hydrospeed, or canoeing will allow you to discover this little Savoyard paradise in a different way! 🫕
Be careful, you might just get hooked by the Alps in this nature expedition! 😅
The main distance of the event. For the more trained and those who crave a challenge. Indeed, training will be necessary to complete these 42 km. With a positive elevation of 430 m+ and a negative elevation of 430 m-, it is an alpine marathon with a trail flair offered to you.
Always starting from the Bourg-Saint-Maurice funicular, your alpine expedition will begin heading towards Villaroger Federer. A word of advice: avoid the spiked shoes and ice axes, they won't be of much use here... 😅
You will run in a wooded environment that is very pleasant. Following the greenway, after a short detour to Séez, you'll be back at Bourg-Saint-Maurice to finish... Or not, IT'S NOT OVER! You'll only pass through the start and finish village for a few minutes 😉 (don't let yourself fall, even if your ankles are weak, crossing the finish line, you know it's not that easy... 🤣). You will then continue your journey through the forest trails of Tarentaise and the bike path along the banks of the Isère, which will lead you towards the villages of Macot-la-Plagne and Aime-la-Plagne. But there's no time to stop and strap on your skis 🎿, there's a race to finish! 🚨
Returning to Bourg-Saint-Maurice to conclude (for real this time) your epic journey in style, you can finally savor your victory like a champion! 🥇
205 m. This is the positive elevation gain AND the negative elevation gain that await you in this event.
Like the 10 km, the half-marathon course is a loop 🔁. And always starting from the famous funicular of Bourg-Saint-Maurice 🚡.
A little nuance: since the distance is longer, the organizers offer you this time to connect to the town of Séez, while weaving through along the Isère. After passing the few kilometers of asphalt at the start of the race, your adventure will then continue on the greenway and the banks of the Isère 🏞. Don't worry, all the routes will be signposted and ground markings will be put in place so as not to lose track of the event. It will indeed be the red route ❤️ that you will have to follow for this half-marathon 😉.
After a descent to the region, it's off for a full speed on 7 km along the Isère, in the opposite direction this time, to reach Bourg-Saint-Maurice and the finish line. And yes, you won't even have time to work on your slalom 😆.
The start of the 10 km, the shortest distance of this event, is given near the Funicular of Bourg-Saint-Maurice🚡.
Here we go! You're off towards Séez, a nearby village, separated by a ton of forest. While running along the Isère, you will be captivated by the natural beauty surrounding you, and you will glide along the greenway 🌱and the green avenues of the Tarentaise. Be careful to stay focused, as the route will be slightly undulating with some climbs 🥵. After a well-deserved refreshment at the midway point, it will be time to complete your loop to return to the starting point, which also serves as the finish line for the event 🔃.
And that's where you can say the loop is looped! ➰
A short walk in the heart of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, 5.5 km of supportive walking! 🔍
Starting at the funicular of the town, like for the other distances, head south to follow the Isère. "Let's stroll in the woods 🪵", at the halfway point, about-face! We return towards the finish line, to celebrate this wonderful walk 💕, organized to support multiple sclerosis 💐.
