Black is its color, built from the dark lava of an ancient volcano, and its nickname "The Black Pearl" suits it perfectly ⚫️. Have you guessed where we were taking you? Of course to Agde, the town made to host a night race 🌙. Here is the perfect setting for an event where you run in circles without ever passing out 👁️. The Backyard Series Agde sets up its arch on the banks of the Hérault, at the foot of the Moulin des Évêques, in this Greek city that the Phocaeans were already calling « good fortune »🌒. Set between the vineyards of Languedoc and the beaches of the Cap, the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean fully deserves its nickname: its volcanic basalt, once spewed by Mont Saint-Loup, dresses the alleys and façades in a dark cloak that fits perfectly with the race’s nighttime atmosphere 🏃. In mid-December, the thermometer walks a tightrope: rather mild days around 13°C, damp nights that bite at your calves, and sometimes the tramontane wind blowing hot and cold along the Hérault coastline 🥶. Better to know before you pack your bag, so you can bring what you need 🧤.
The principle fits in one line, but it keeps you on the edge of your seat for hours 🥵. A 6.706 km loop to be completed in under an hour, then you do it again at the next signal 🔁. If you succeed, you can head out for another loop (if your legs agree), and keep going until you can’t take it anymore! 🤯 Yes, basically the goal is to GIVE IT EVERYTHING, from start to finish, but intelligently, so you can do as many loops as possible, in good shape 😁. For this one, the course winds through the alleys of the historic center, deceptively runnable and secretly leg-breaking with those basalt cobblestones. So, lap after lap, your footing will grow more and more uncertain until even the slightest surge turns into a tough negotiation with your calves 😅. The scenery, meanwhile, will have you running alongside the Hérault as the water flows, brushing past the fortified silhouette of Saint-Étienne Cathedral carved from black lava, crossing the reflections of headlamps on the quays, before passing under the Moulin arch again to launch into one more lap 🏁. The more the hours go by, the longer the loops will feel—but that’s where your mindset will matter 🧠. Note, too, that the race comes in two versions. The first is the infinite version, and the « Backyard Access Agde » with a maximum of 6 loops, i.e., nearly 40 km on the clock with several finishers rewarded—so you can get introduced to the concept without betting your survival until dawn 😄.
Behind this backyard format lies the legacy of Lazarus Lake, the mischievous mind who created the formidable Barkley deep in Tennessee 🤠. The backyard ultra concept was even celebrated on French soil in his presence, during the very first Backyard Series in early 2025 🗓️. Since then, the discipline has seen Phil Gore swallow 119 loops on the other side of the globe—nearly 800 km straight! 😳 Enough to put your own barriers into perspective 🔥. On Agde’s cobblestones, Julian Bilo completed 31 laps, i.e. 207.9 km, and Stéphanie Chabaud did 22 loops : the equivalent of 147.5 km. The first home records thus give you a very concrete target 🎯.
On the refreshment side, Agde knows how to host—and not only at the organizer’s table 🙂↕️. Just nearby, the Thau lagoon serves up its Bouzigues oysters, the tielle inherited from Sète fills empty stomachs, and a glass of Picpoul de Pinet rewards brave legs 😋. That’s carb reloading, Southern style ☀️. Between two scouting jogs, stroll along the Canal du Midi to its surprising round lock, head to the Cap d'Agde and its coves, or climb Mont Saint-Loup, a dormant volcano silently watching over the bay 🌊. The town carries nearly 2,600 years of history in its cobblestones, so explore it in recovery mode before or after the effort 😄.
Here, « the loop is looped » takes on its full meaning: you’ll head out again and again until the night surrenders (or you do) 😉. So, ready to join the Backyard Series Agde to shake out the legs before Christmas? 🤓
Start given at the Moulin des Évêques, on the banks of the Hérault 🏁.
You link up a 6.706 km loop that winds through the cobbled alleys of the historic center, runs alongside the river, and brushes past the cathedral of black basalt before returning to the starting point. The profile stays flat, seemingly fast, but the cobblestones quickly turn every surge back into a leg-breaker 😅.
Six loops maximum, i.e. nearly 40 km: the equivalent of a marathon, almost... Unlike the classic format, several runners cross the line here as finishers 🙌. With elevation gain close to 0 mD+, this format is ideal for getting initiated into the backyard spirit before aiming bigger 🤓.
Same route, same cobblestones, but this time with no fixed finish line 🔁. Start given at the Moulin des Évêques, on the banks of the Hérault🏁.
You string together a 6.706 km loop that winds through the cobbled alleys of the historic center, runs along the river and brushes past the black basalt cathedral before returning to the start point. The profile stays flat, seemingly fast-rolling, but the cobblestones quickly turn every surge into a leg-breaker 😅. You restart your loop every hour, right on the signal, as long as your legs keep answering. To give you an idea, in 24 loops, you rack up exactly 100 miles, the sacred distance of ultra-endurance 🔥.
The urban course stays flat (elevation gain close to 0 mD+), but repetition, the night cold, and sleep starting to nag make the perceived difficulty climb hour after hour. On Agde’s cobblestones, the in-house record already stands at 31 loops (207.9 km) for men and 22 loops (147.5 km) for women 😄.
Only one survivor will be declared finisher: it’s up to you to beat the clock ⌚️.
