Semi-Marathon de Bidasoa
Fancy putting on your sneakers in the Basque Country again? 👟
In February, join the half marathon of the Bidassoa in Irún. There are no hellish climbs or treacherous inclines here: the course is flat, smooth, and certified for hunters of hungry personal bests 💥. Want to achieve your PB? This is the place 📍. What makes this race unique is that it runs along the Franco-Spanish border for almost the entire route 🇪🇸. At the same time, this boundary is formed by... the Bidassoa river, hence the name of the race! 💦
You'll then run along the Bidassoa, that river coming directly from the Pyrenees and passing through Hendaye🏘️. We hope you're ready to speed up ⚡️, because a flat route awaits you 🤩. On the program, 21 km of pure pleasure among colorful Basque facades, historic alleys, and coastal scenery 🌊. But this event isn't a walk in the park ❌. If you're just starting to run, this isn't the race to try your luck 😈. With a time limit of 2h30 and 5 checkpoints to validate, you'll have to speed up, even if you're not well-trained! 🤪 Starting from Irún, you'll head up to the bay of Hondarribia, offering a spectacular view of Mount Jaizkibel ⛰️. The event also offers a 10 km route if you prefer short and intense distances 💥. Moreover, this race supports Tadamun Elkartea, particularly the " Holidays in Peace " program that allows Sahrawi children to enjoy a respite away from the camps, spending the summer in Hondarribia. 100% of runner donations will go to them! 🫶. If that doesn't make you run even faster, we don't know what will! 🥵.
Once you have the medal around your neck, don't head home immediately! 😊 "What?? But I'm exhausted, I want to go back 😫". Come on, a little motivation!, the Basque Country awaits you with freshly made pintxos 😋. Go and devour some grilled squid, delicious croquetas or a good axoa of Espelette on a terrace, with a local craft beer or a glass of cool txakoli 🍷. And if you really need a post-race nap, head to the Hendaye beaches, or take a dip in the coves of Hondarribia 💦. And if you still have energy ⚡️, a walk through the foothills of the Basque mountains awaits to digest all that ⛰️.
So, are you ready to run faster than a Basque pelota player? ⚾️
The race starts at Paseo de Colón in Irun 📍. The route follows the Bidasoa river towards Fontarrabie, reaching the end of the port in the bay of Hondarribia 😍. Then you return to Irún. The second part of the route takes you through the city and along the Bidasoa river 💧. Along the way, you'll pass landmarks such as the Santa María gate and the Roman museum 🏛️. After a few turns, congratulations champion! You have arrived at the Urdanibia Square where you can collect your medal 🏅.
This route starts in the center of Irún, taking the Paseo de Colón 📍. Soon, you will reach the banks of the Río Bidasoa, which you will follow for several kilometers 🏃. This section offers a smooth and flat path, perfect for maintaining a good pace 💨. After this "natural" segment along the river, you will return to the streets of Irún, with a more urban circuit that winds through several neighborhoods of the city center. Like the half marathon, you will finish at Plaza Urdanibia, right in the heart of Irún.
