Forget classic, flat Ironman races. JÁNOŠÍK Slovak Xtreme Triathlon in Slovakia is an option only for people of iron – the kind tempered in icy mountain streams. It’s one of the toughest, most extreme long-distance triathlons in Europe, held in the incredible scenery of Malá Fatra National Park and the regions of Orava and Kysuce.
There’s no fighting for PBs here – here, you fight to survive and for the legendary title of Jánošík. The challenge begins… at midnight! We start in pitch-black darkness in the cool waters of the Orava Reservoir (Oravská priehrada) to swim 3.8 kilometers before a brutal, mountainous 180-kilometer course awaits. And the elevation gain? Nearly 2600 meters of old Slovak climbs that don’t end until the heart of Terchová. An extreme mountain marathon is the final challenge! The route leads through technical trails of Malá Fatra, including the legendary Jánošíkove Diery, with the finish line set high in the mountains. At this stage, support from your own crew is mandatory (the so-called support runner).
When, after an inhuman effort, you (or your athlete) cross the finish line and the extreme emotions subside, Terchová and Malá Fatra will offer you perfect conditions for well-earned recovery (although for the first few days, going down the stairs may be a challenge):
Monument to Juraj Jánošík: a monumental, 7-meter steel sculpture of the legendary outlaw towers over Terchová. It’s a must-have spot for a commemorative photo from the finished race ⚔️.
Gondola ride up to Chleb: If your legs refuse to cooperate after the mountain marathon and you still want to feast your eyes on the Malá Fatra panorama, hop on the gondola from the Vrátna valley up beneath the Chleb ridge. Views without a drop of sweat guaranteed 🚠.
Jánošíkove diery: If you’re a spectator or still have the strength for an easy walk the day after the start, these deep gorges with a system of ladders, footbridges, and waterfalls can amaze in any season. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Slovakia 🌲.
A true outlaw’s feast for a massive calorie deficit: Slovak cuisine is perfect for loading up on carbs after extreme effort. Head to a traditional koliba and order Bryndzové halušky(dumplings with bryndza and cracklings), hearty kapustnica (a thick soup with sauerkraut and sausage), and fried cheese with fries. It’s best washed down with the iconic, chilled Kofola on tap 🍲🍻.
Pack a mighty dose of grit, gather a trusted support crew, and face the legend head-on on the JÁNOŠÍK Slovak Xtreme Triathlon course!
