Run into a music-filled night in the heart of Slovakia! Banskobystrický maratón (Marathon in Banská Bystrica) is a unique event and one of the most important running celebrations among our southern neighbors, famed as the only evening marathon in Central Europe with fully decked-out sound production and music zones along the entire course 🏃🌃. Runners can choose from the full marathon distance (42.2 km), a half marathon (21.1 km), 10 km and 5 km races, relays, and kids’ runs. The route follows flat, very fast loops on city streets closed to traffic, with the runners’ village by the Europa SC center, and a dusk start, lighting effects, and the residents’ passionate cheering create a one-of-a-kind, high-energy atmosphere.
After crossing the finish line, Banská Bystrica and the surrounding mountains of the Veľká Fatra and the Kremnica Mountains invite you to an experience-packed unwind! Take a stroll through one of Slovakia’s most beautiful main squares – Námestie SNP with the leaning Clock Tower (Hodinová veža), Renaissance townhouses and the city castle (Barbakán), and also see the monumental building of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising (Múzeum SNP) 🏛️. Head to the nearby village of Hronsek to admire the unique, entirely wooden Articular church (UNESCO), or discover a fairy-tale world of stalactites in the Harmanecká Cave(Harmanecká jaskyňa) 🌲🦇. Visit the historic village of Špania Dolina located a few kilometers from the city – a former copper miners’ settlement with traditional folk architecture, surrounded by hiking trails in the Veľká Fatra range 🏔️.
At the end of the day, recharge with traditional bryndza halušky with bacon cracklings, a hearty goulash soup or kapustnica, and celebrate your running success with a mug of local Urpiner beer, brewed right in Banská Bystrica 🧀🥓🍺
