This year, open wide your mirage-eyes and fully enjoy the Drôme landscapes 🤩.
No, this is not a mirage, this year a new race named MiraTrail invites you to Mirabel-aux-Baronnies, in the Drôme 🪻. Far from the tarmac and record races, two 100% trail courses will let you discover the landscapes of the Drôme department 👟. The names should be familiar to you with "La Belle" of 20 km and 700m ascent, and the formidable course of "La Bête" covering 40 km with 1500m ascent 👹. This autumn, defy the seasonal cold for a weekend and come challenge the best adventurers in the region 😈.
As for the courses, say goodbye to flat and dull city center trails. Here, you find yourself in deep Provence 🌿, alternating between olive groves and valleys 🫒, to the sound of cicadas and crickets 🦗. Whether you choose the discovery trail of "La Belle" or the intermediate trail of "La Bête", you'll cross typical villages like Piégon and Mérindol-les-Oliviers 🏰, where ancient hamlets will make you feel like you've traveled back in time 💨. No chainmail running though, you're allowed to wear your nicest tank top to lighten your stride 😝. The big difference between these two distances is the elevation 📈. As the saying goes, it's a "simple to double" ratio. Twice the distance for twice the slope 😅. It's up to you to see which challenge you'll tackle 👀. The specialty of the route also lies in its spectacular ridges and passages through typical regional rocks: grey marl 🪨. You'll have a 360° view with the Mont Ventoux as a natural backdrop 🏞️. It's technical, it's wild, and it's going to require a good amount of energy, so energize yourself before the start ⚡️.
And if landscapes don't attract you that much, you can always go as a football fan ⚽️. The famous goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez long wore the number 26 jersey, identical to the department number 😎. Other players like Idriss Saadi or Romain Saïss are also from the area 🏟️. But football is not the only sport celebrated. Getting back to our roots 🐑, triathlete Léo Bergère and multi-medalist athlete Kevin Mayer are also from here 🏅. More than a simple land of nature and mountain, the large department of the Drôme is also a true sports hotbed.
As for the culinary specialties, don't be mistaken, it's not about mirabelle plums 🌸 (as the name might suggest), but much more substantial... and indulgent dishes! Caillette, pogne, suisse, or even pangée are dishes blending aromas and flavor combinations for the delight of your taste buds 🤤. Once your belly is full, you can spend a peaceful afternoon enjoying the antique sites of Vaison-la-Romaine 🧱, less than 10 km away, or take it easy along the Eygues and Ouvèze. Work hard first, enjoy hard later 😎. And to make sure you don't return empty-handed, set course for Montélimar. The local nougats will surely melt into happiness, and you can use the pretext of souvenirs to fill your pockets 👝.
So, ready for a Drôme trail at the end of the season? 🏃
"The Beast" is waiting for you and will give you a run for your money 👹.
The start is at Mirabel-aux-Baronnies, for 40 km through the Provençal landscapes 🌿. Few flat areas in the program, but rather gradual climbs lasting several hours. The most challenging part is between km 27 and km 32, so save your strength until then ⚡️. In 5 km, you will gain the equivalent of 500 mD+. It's not a cliff, but almost 😅. Once you reach the Mont de Garde-Grosse, you just have to coast for the last 8 kilometers and enjoy the feeling of speed 💨.
If you want to discover the route in more detail, you can also visit the following page: here 👈. The route crosses the Parc naturel régional des Baronnies provençales and the Parc naturel régional of the Mont Ventoux ⛰️.
"The Beauty" is a discovery trail, where you will discover the "pleasure" of effort and soreness 🤣.
On the agenda: only one big climb, so there's no risk of getting lost 😉. You tackle the big hill from the second kilometer and conquer it by the fourteenth (km 14). In between, almost 700 mD+ of vertical effort 🥵. Suffice to say, it's not a challenge to be taken lightly. We advise preparing your thighs a bit before the big day 🏃♀️.
At the finish, celebrate with dignity then rush to cheer on the other finishers 🗣️. The trail is above all a great moment of sharing 🫂.
