A castle overlooking the valley, centuries-old oaks, and an enchanting river at the foot of an ancient bridge 🌉: it’s the perfect fairytale setting. Let us tell you the story of the Najac Trail, which you can be part of if the mood strikes you ❤️🔥.
If you’re looking for an adventure that brings you back to medieval times and magical legends, the Najac Trail should fully meet your expectations 🧚. For its first edition, this trail in the heart of nature takes place in Aveyron, starting from the AAGAC leisure center. In the same day, you’ll run along the Aveyron, tame the Occitan hills, and tackle the highest walls of the local fortress 🏰. Between the rocky ridgelines, the valley woodlands, and the breathtaking viewpoints, you’ll be Najac-ing in pure happiness 😍.
But enough Najac-ing around—here’s more about what awaits you across the running formats. Long trail, short trail, a shared effort with others, or a fast-hike format—there’s something for absolutely everyone 🏃. For the most die-hard running fans, the 16 km version is the one to line up for. The route starts at the foot of the hill and won’t be easy: 600 m D+ spread over 2 big climbs—you’ll have earned that finish-line snack 😅. If you start sweating just thinking about that distance, you can also go for the 9 km and its 300 m D+: you save a few kilometers and cut the elevation gain in half. In short, it’s the perfect way to take on your first outdoor event 😉. This course can even be done as a "hike" if you’re really afraid of getting out of breath 😮💨. For tight-knit teams, there’s also a "duo relay" or a "four-person relay", so you can share the effort, the suffering, the wins, and the losses 🥵. Sport is always more beautiful when it’s shared 🫂. And because everyone is invited to the party, kids get their own dedicated route too: the "Kids" race of 800 m is a real challenge for little ones aged 6 to 12. A chance to get a first taste of adversity and competition while keeping the festive event atmosphere.
But Aveyron isn’t limited to a lovely race in October; it’s a department packed with historical and cultural wonders. First, after looping around it for dozens of kilometers, climb to the top of that stone behemoth and enjoy the view from the Château de Najac 👀. From up there, you’ll quickly see why the little village is labeled "Most Beautiful Villages of France". It’s one of the 180 municipalities and communities of municipalities in France to hold significant historical heritage recognized nationwide 🇫🇷. Once the historical visit is over, make a detour to Villefranche-de-Rouergue to enjoy the cobbled streets and local artisans, then finish the morning on a little sunny terrace ☀️. After a lunch featuring local aligot, tripous, or farçous, head to Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val for a post-meal stroll along the Aveyron 🧭. With all that, you should already have a pretty good idea of what Aveyron is all about! 🤤
So if you want to make sure everything we’ve told you is nothing but the truth, all you have to do is go there and see for yourself! ✅
A word from the organizer:
"The first edition of the Najac trail is organized by three young locals from Najac: they’ve put together a route with all the trimmings, in the heart of the Aveyron Valley, between the river, centuries-old oaks, and other delights… We’re excited to reveal it all to you, but we won’t say more for now—come and experience it for yourselves."
For the big sister of the event, the start is given at 9 a.m.. A 600 mD+ course split into two intense climbs is waiting for you. We recommend you show up well prepared (and well rested) on the big day, if you don’t want to lose your lungs on the way 🫁. Hillside trails, the banks of the Aveyron and rocky ridgelines will be your best friends all morning long.
So, ready to burn it all down?
The start of the "Short trail" is given at 9:30 a.m. and largely follows the route of the long course, while reducing the elevation gain: 300 mD+ is enough to turn these 9 km into a true level revealer 😮💨. The course alternates runnable sections in woodland and more technical surges on the sides of the valley. Luckily, you’ll be able to enjoy the shade of century-old oak trees to push again without burning out 🥵.
The start of the "relay" is given at 10 a.m. at the AAGAC leisure base, at Païsserou. This format to run as a duo or as a team of four lets you discover Najac in a different way, on a single loop that follows the Aveyron before gently climbing back toward the first foothills of the village 🔄. The profile remains accessible, designed so you can take turns without burning yourselves out, between flowing sections along the riverbank and a few more sustained pick-ups to wake the bodies up 🔥.
A "Kids" course is offered at the Najac Trail 🤪. It is open to children aged 6 to 12 and has the young recruits scampering for nearly 800 m through the Najac landscapes. And sleepyheads can enjoy it too: the start is at noon, so everyone has time to wake up 😴.
You can pick up your bib at the AAGAC leisure center, at Le Païsserou in Najac, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, starting at 7:30 a.m.
