“Hell of the North?? This race sure makes you want to...” 😨
Strap on your helmet and prepare your lower back, because we’re not talking about a simple Sunday ride, but a pilgrimage to the land of chosen suffering! 🧱 The Paris-Roubaix Challenge is your chance to rub shoulders with the best, because your start takes place just a few hours before the pro cyclists 💥. It’s a bit like being allowed to kick a ball just before the World Cup final, except here the grass is replaced by granite blocks laid by a giant who clearly had a score to settle with cyclists. 👹.
The choice of distances comes in three options: 70 km, 145 km or 170 km 🥵. If you choose the long course, you’ll get the full experience. You’ll discover the Trouée d'Arenberg, a perfectly straight 2,300-meter stretch drawn with a ruler through the forest. For the record, it was Jean Stablinski, a former miner turned world champion, who suggested this passage to the organizers in 1968 💡. He used to take this road when he went to work, and the least you can say is that it rattles! 😂 As soon as the race hit this road in 1968, the peloton crashed, the rain showed up, and the situation became hellish: DNFs piled up 🥴. Only twenty riders crossed the finish line in Roubaix! 😦 Don’t worry—on this legendary route, you won’t be alone: enthusiasts from all over the world come to suffer together 🥵. You’ll also pass through the Carrefour de l'Arbre, a sector rated 5 stars (the cycling equivalent of “run, you fools!”) 😵💫. But don’t forget: you’re on roads open. So if you come across a railcar or a tractor, please don’t try to draft it—follow the Highway Code 😉. And why do all this? For the ultimate Grail: entering the Roubaix Velodrome 🏁. Picture the scene: you arrive with dust in your teeth, arms trembling like you’ve spent the day with a jackhammer, but you set your tires on that mythical concrete 🤩. Historically, it’s there that riders covered in mud would throw themselves into the famous stone showers (which you might be able to catch a glimpse of!) 🧼.
And after that, what to do? You can stroll through the historic streets of Lille and visit the Grand'Place 🏛️, the Vieux-Lille or the Palais des Beaux-Arts 🎭. We recommend exploring La Piscine Museum in Roubaix, a former public bathhouse turned museum of art and industry 🏭. For a nature break, go for the magic of the Opal Coast, with its magnificent beaches and impressive cliffs 🌊.
So, ready to get shaken up by the cobbles? 🫨
