In the month of June, Foc' is on the move! ๐คช
If you haven't yet decided between discovery and sports vacations, don't stress it ๐ง . Get on your bike at the start of summer and set off to conquer North Catalonia! The mythical Pedals de Foc race is organizing a new edition in mid-June, and MTB is honored for over 200 km ๐. Whether you're a fan of thrills, endurance, or enchanting landscapes, the race of legends awaits you in Vielha, in the Val d'Aran region to kick off the summer season in grand style (or on a grand saddle ๐ฒ).
For the occasion, 2 courses are offered: the "PDF Nonstop Gold" ๐ฅ and the "PDF Nonstop Silver" ๐ฅ. The first is the flagship event: an Ultra-marathon in MTB. Nothing less. You'll have to complete a loop of 211 km and an elevation gain of 6,148 mD+ in less than 20h ๐. No e-bikes allowed; effort and sweat are the watchwords of the weekend ๐ฅต. You'll travel through the heart of the Pyrenees, at the border of France, Andorra, and Spain ๐ช๐ธ. The forests, underwoods and semi-asphalted paths will be the main environment of your journey ๐ฆ. Moreover, if you enjoy the event and decide to return every year, you could achieve the title of "Pedal of Legend". Pretty classy, isn't it? You will gain access to an exclusive jersey, discounts, and be officially inducted into the "Hall of Legends" ๐ฆธโโ๏ธ. The second course, "PDF Nonstop Silver", is 80 km. With its elevation gain of 1,860 mD+ ๐, this route will provide your legs more rest, but you won't be lacking in pedal strokes โ. By taking your race number, you are in for several hours of landscape and sports discoveries ๐. However, don't get too caught up in the view; the races are timed and have set time barriers โ๏ธ.
But a good trip abroad, Foc' makes it as much in your legs as in your stomach ๐ฝ๏ธ. Luckily for your taste buds, the Southwest of France is quite famous for its hearty and tasty recipes ๐คค. From รlha Aranesa to Wild Boar Stew to local Crepes ๐ฅ, you can satisfy your taste buds with authentic savory and sweet dishes. Once your belly is full, take advantage of your trip to explore the surroundings โฐ๏ธ. The Val d'Aran, located in the province of Lleida, is a true natural paradise ๐. The small mountain villages are surrounded by vast forest stretches ๐ชต where you can easily go hiking for long hours ๐ฅพ (assuming you have some energy left ๐ชซ). And if the area enchants you, feel free to return for a visit in July. The Hoka Val d'Aran by UTMB takes place there every year and attracts runners from all around the world ๐. The perfect opportunity to diversify your training and combine trail and MTB ๐ต.
So, if your bike has been sitting in the back of the shed for weeks, get the pressure washer out and oil the pedal ๐. Pedals de Foc is the ideal event to set yourself a new challenge and plan a vacation at the start of summer โ๏ธ.
Message from the organizer:
"It is the pioneering MTB ultra-marathon race worldwide. It is also the only event that circumnavigates the Aigรผestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, in the heart of the Pyrenees!"
For the great champions, head to the PDF gold version ๐ฅ. No, we're not talking about a web file format, but a cycling race that promises great surprises over more than 200 km.
You will start from Vielha for a route alternating between forest undergrowth and semi-paved road ๐ณ. At km 10, keep your eyes wide open: you'll speed through the Vielha tunnel, and it would be a shame to crash into a wall ๐คฆโโ๏ธ. From km 22, Col du Senet is waiting for you, to lead you to Port de la Gelada. Right off the bat, you'll tackle one of the steepest slopes of the route. But see the positive, what's done is done! ๐ฅธ
Keep your hands tightly on the handlebars for the descents that follow โฌ. The passage of Ermita Sant Salvador of Coll de Peranera or Coll d'Oli are relatively technical. It's going to be a bumpy ride! ๐ตโโ๏ธ Don't linger too long on the way, time barriers are in place at km 97 and km 143.5 ๐ง, to make sure you keep up the pace.
When you reach km 165, keep smiling ๐, you're almost there. The refreshment stop at Isil will give you all the strength you need to finish the race. The gradual climb that follows will be the last of your journey. We can assure you that you'll never have been so happy to see the small town of Vielha in the distance ๐คช.
The little sister of the PDF Nonstop Gold is waiting for you for an 80 km ๐๏ธ course.
The departure time will delight late risers, who can rest until 11:30 AM and have breakfast without stress ๐ฅ. However, you will need to get to Espot to start on the silver course ๐ฅ. After about ten rolling kilometers, you'll tackle the Col du Pla de la Font, for a slope of 7.5%. We never said it would be a piece of cake ๐ฐ.
You will encounter the second major difficulty of the course around km 37, after a well-stocked refreshment point ๐ฝ๏ธ. Take enough supplies for the second half of the course and give it your all in the last descent that will bring you back to Vielha.
