The event in a few words

Get ready for one of the most extraordinary running experiences in the world! The Suzuki Midnight Sun Run in Reykjavik takes place every year around the summer solstice, which means you’ll run beneath a sky that never fully gets dark ☀️. It’s a magical time when the horizon shimmers in shades of purple, pink, and gold, and you rack up the kilometers in the middle of the night by daylight. Runners can choose between a half marathon (21.097 km), a fast “10K” (10 km), and a recreational 5 km distance 🏃. The course is relatively flat and runs through the green, peaceful Laugardalur Valley, offering unique relaxation and an escape from the hustle and bustle. Best of all—the finish line is located right next to the city’s largest geothermal pool complex, and every participant (usually as part of the entry fee) receives a free ticket for some well-deserved relaxation in the hot springs! 🏊‍♀️

Once you’ve collected your thoroughly deserved medal and regenerated your muscles in volcanic waters, Iceland will open up its raw, spectacular side to you:

For a walk: Head to the oceanfront to snap a souvenir photo by the sculpture Sun Voyager (Sólfar), an impressive steel structure reminiscent of a Viking ship. Then stroll to the incredible Hallgrímskirkja church, inspired by basalt rocks, and admire the city’s colorful rooftops from its tower ⛪.

For families: Literally right next to the finish area is Laugardalslaug—the geothermal pool mentioned above. While adults soak tired legs in the “hot pots” (traditional hot tubs at different temperatures), kids can go wild on the water slides 💦. Another great option is a visit to Perlan—a futuristic museum on a hill, where a real ice cave has been built 🌌.

For a trip: When you’re in Reykjavik, it’s a sin not to get out of the city! Rent a car and head out on the famous Golden Circle. In less than an hour you’ll reach Thingvellir National Park (where tectonic plates meet), see the erupting Strokkur geyser, and feel the power of the Gullfoss waterfall 🌋 for yourself.

After the run, you need to refuel the Icelandic way. A must is the legendary hot dog from the unassuming stand Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur (best ordered with everything: crispy and raw onions, sweet mustard, ketchup, and remoulade sauce) 🌭. For a proper, warming meal, the traditional lamb soup (Kjötsúpa) or a thick fish casserole (Plokkfiskur) is perfect.
