Cycling Sportives in Ticino

Calendar of cycling sportives in Ticino

Ticino, the kingdom of alpine passes

Gotthard, Nufenen, Lukmanier, San Bernardino: Ticino strings together mythical passes, with cycling sportives to join in Graubünden and Valais, such as the Race Across Suisse and Le Tour des Stations.

Ticino draws cyclists like a magnet: lakes, deep valleys and legendary passes follow one another within just a few dozen kilometers 🚴. For a cycling sportive in Ticino, the canton offers playgrounds to match every ambition.

The terrain demands patience and strong legs. The Saint-Gotthard Pass, with its famous cobbled Via Tremola, the Nufenen, which peaks at 2,478 m, the Lukmanier and the San Bernardino fuel climbers' dreams. Valley roads, like the Leventina or the Valle Maggia, offer long, steady ramps, while the shores of Lake Maggiore allow you to recover on the flat 🌄. The season runs from April to October, but the high passes generally only open in June, after the snow has been cleared. A windbreaker remains essential at altitude. Experienced cyclists often string together several climbs in the same ride, with fast descents where concentration is a must. The more cautious start with the gentler climbs, to gauge their form before tackling the monuments.

For now, the major cycling sportives take place in neighboring regions. The cycling sportives calendar includes the Race Across Suisse in July, starting from Klosters in Graubünden. In August, Le Tour des Stations starts from Verbier, in Valais, with top-level climbs 🏔️. The cycling sportives in Graubünden and the cycling sportives in Switzerland round out the program.

Ticino has its own rituals: after a long ride, a stop at a grotto, a rustic inn nestled under chestnut trees, puts your mind back in order 😄. A plate of polenta, cheese and local cured meats amply rewards the effort 🍽️. From your first pass to the goal of a whole season, everyone chooses their race according to their level, their training and their love of climbing.
