This time, you won't be going to Switzerland to ski, but to cycle 🚴♂️. The Tour of Stations taking place between the cities of Sion, Sierre, and Le Châble promises you physical and scenic wonders 🏋️♀️.
At the end of August, when summer is ending and autumn is approaching fast 🍂, don't let yourself be downcast by the return to school, the end of vacations, and the falling temperatures, and head to the resort of Le Châble, not far from the famous Lake Geneva ⛵️. The best remedy against time is called the Tour of Stations and offers you several exceptional routes through the canton of Valais. Between winding passes, mountain peaks, and steep descents, you will return home with incredible memories in your head 💭.
Don't worry, we'll describe the place a bit for you so you don't feel completely lost once you arrive 😉. First, imagine going to a ski resort in the middle of summer, with well-maintained paved roads connecting the different neighboring villages 🛣️. Then visualize natural landscapes, ranging from mountains, forests, and small vineyards on rolling hills 🍇. Finally, get ready to party. Events of such magnitude are not organized in the region every day, and the locals intend to take advantage to light up the dance floor 🕺. Once you arrive, you will be tired, but the atmosphere and animation on site will keep you going all night long without any problem ✨.
Now that the scene is set, let's focus on the sporting aspect 🧐. The organization is not at its first attempt and continues to deliver successful editions. Over time, the routes have developed, and today we find 4 individual routes, 1 relay route, and 1 junior route for our favorite little ones 🤩. The relay takes place on the largest offered route: the "Ultrafondo". It's quite the challenge where you have to be "ultra-tough" 💪. For over 240 km and almost 9,000 mD+ (higher than Mount Everest or just over 27 times the height of the Eiffel Tower 😵). And it's not just one climb followed by one big descent ❌. We're talking about 10 formidable climbs, which will draw on your deepest strength. And if that doesn't scare you, then sign up as an individual. In this case, you can even start at 2:30 am and experience the first tens of kilometers in night mode 🌙. Original, right? Anyway, there's also the "Superfondo" route and the "Marmotte Granfondo" 🪨 path. Two routes of 186 km and 132 km, respectively, with an additional 4,700 mD+ and 7,000 mD+. We're still talking about a very high athletic level ☠️. To put it in perspective and to help you visualize the magnitude of the feat you're about to accomplish: on a Grand Tour, the average stage distance and elevation gain are typically 170 km for 1,700 mD+. Even on the most famous high mountain stages ⛰️, such as the Alpine or Dolomitic stages, positive elevation gain usually doesn't exceed 5,000 mD+. It's going to be impressive and exhausting. Finally, if you're looking for a challenge worthy of the name, but you don't have extraordinary physical conditions 🏃, the last route, the "Mediofondo", will be perfect for you. Set off leisurely at 8:00 am ⏰, enjoy the landscapes, and finish your race before nightfall, at 8:30 pm 🕣. If you pedal quickly, you might even return in time to watch the children take on the "Bambinofondo" course, consisting of several loops in the small village of Verbier. So, what's your verdict? 🤔
The next day brings relief 🛏️. Once you've recovered well and the race is just a vague memory, savor the wonders the region has to offer. Switzerland is renowned worldwide 🇨🇭, largely because of its natural and wild environment. Without straying too far from the area, you can start exploring numerous hikes and small pedestrian trails 🥾. Head to the Conches Valley, the Saas Valley, or even Chablais-Valaisan, at the French border 🇫🇷. These territories have as many routes as there are chocolate varieties 🤤. But you don't have to exercise to have fun, and if relaxation is more your thing 🔌, know that the area boasts numerous thermal spas, which you can find in Saillon, Loèche-les-Bains, Ovronnaz, Val-d'Illiez, or even Brigerbad. We've given you an entire list so you can try them all (and come back to tell us which ones you preferred) 🛁. To combat the current heat 🥵, you can also visit the Aletsch Glacier or the Fee Glacier, where you should be able to find coolness, even in the middle of summer 🧊.
Between chocolate bars and chocolate abs 🍫, the Tour of Stations will make your head spin. Head to Le Châble next August; your race number is waiting for you! 🎽
Organizer's Message:
"Each year, the Tour of Stations pushes the limits of what we imagine possible a little further. This race is not only a sports challenge: it is a human adventure, intense and unforgettable. This year again, we invite you to an edition that promises to be exceptional. 4 distances, a mythical mountain, and a common goal: to offer you the most demanding and grand cycling experience of your season. Whether you aim for performance, personal accomplishment, or simply the thrill of the mountain, our entire team is ready to welcome you on the Valais roads for a challenge worthy of your ambition. We will see you on August 29 at the start line. Ready to climb your Everest?"
The "Ultrafondo" distance for individuals is for true enthusiasts of cycling. The course won't let you breathe 😮💨. With nearly 9000 mD+ and 241 km long, it can drive you crazy 🐐. It's not for nothing that the nickname given to this race is "Ultrafondo the Everest". We'll let you make the connection in your head 😬.
As with every race, you'll start in the festive atmosphere found on the route de Mauvoisin, at Le Châble. Well, for those starting at 2:30 AM, we can't guarantee everyone will be up, but the early birds will be there to cheer you on, promise 🫶. You'll then embark on a maximum of 18 hours of racing with an average gradient of 3.7%. Dazzling figures 🫨. Your first opponent will be the Col du Lein, in Vollèges, where you'll start with an ascent of about 900 m. A piece of cake compared to what's next 🍰, but enough for a good warm-up. In order, you'll take on the Col d'Ovronnaz, the Col de Mayens-de-la-Zour, the Anzère, and the Crans-Montana 🏔️. We warned you and we weren't lying: it promises to be hilly.
At this point, half of the course is behind you, but there is still a good portion to go! Release the reins on the descent, and tackle the next 100 km and 4 passes without flinching 🚵♂️. You're lucky these are not the hardest ✅. But save some for the end of the day. The last 30 kilometers are no joke! ❌ Indeed, the organizers are playful and await you at the top of a nice climb: the Col de la Croix-de-Coeur (located nowhere else but at 2100 m altitude 🤦♂️). The last big effort for a well-deserved victory. The post-race meal, goodies, and applause await you at the top of this hill. All the way to the end, champ! 🦸♂️
If you like things done right and you wish to scout the course: enjoy yourself and break the outing into several parts, you'll find the GPX route just below 👇.
Here, you will complete the same course as the individual "Ultramarathon", but by sharing the suffering. Almost too simple, right? Bring your most athletic friends along for the adventure, and book your tickets for Switzerland: the adventure promises to be grand. Plus, the relay involves 3 people. The more, the merrier 🤣.
If you want more details, here they are:
And if you ever find yourself out of breath on a climb and think of throwing in the towel 🧽: think of the runners who tackle the entire course solo 🥲. Just for that, and for all your weeks of preparation, hang in there and go claim that personal victory 🏅.
The Superfondo offers a truly challenging course once again. Just to remind you, tackling 186 km and 7,000 mD+ in a single day is not for everyone 🤯. If you're here, it's because you're prepared and you generally know what to expect. We're still going to provide you with more details 🧐.
Connecting some of the region's ski resorts, this course is no joke. At the start, you'll follow the same route as the "Ultrafondo", crossing through Vollèges, Saxon, and the Col de Mayens-de-la-Zour 🚴♂️. But at this point, the paths diverge ✂️, and you'll let them go on a loop that adds some 70 km to their journey. On your side, you'll have a little over 80 km and 4 mountains to climb (Mayens-de-Vernamiège, Thyon 2000, Nendaz, and the famous Col de la Croix-de-Coeur).
All that's left is to take a good shower, and the finisher meal will be waiting for you, hot, on your plate 🍽️.
The great thing about the Tour des Stations is that the organization has truly thought of all the riders. There is a course suited for any level. The "Marmotte Granfondo" is designed, for example, for amateurs and regular riders who want to embark on a true challenge on their bike. 132 km and 4,700 mD+ is the equivalent of a stage in a Grand Tour 💪. You can therefore compare yourself to the greatest, or at least pretend to 🙃
On the agenda: 5 steep climbs 📈 that will create memories you won't soon forget. Warm up (if we can even call it "warm-up") with the Col du Lein, at Vollèges, then let your legs roll over a twenty kilometers 🦵 stretch, passing through Sion and Saxon. Next, tackle Mayens-de-Vernamiège and keep up the momentum to also conquer Thyon 2000, which will probably leave you a bit worse for wear 😬. Once the climb of Nendaz is in the rear-view 🚘, stay focused and set all-time records on the Col de la Croix-de-Coeur.
And there you have it, it's already over, just sign up for the higher level of the Superfondo next year 😈.
Get ready for the smallest of the adult races! 🚴 Okay, it's the smallest, but that doesn't mean it's easy. We recommend you have some cycling experience before taking on the challenge to complete the "Mediofondo". You'll still be tackling 77 km and 3,000 mD+ (yes, it is indeed 3,000, no mistake 😬).
If you've been a spectator before, you're starting to know the drill: the start is the same for all races on the route de Mauvoisin, at Le Châble. No exceptions, you can get your heart pumping right from the start by taking on the Col du Lein. Make sure to save some energy: once you've conquered this first pass, you'll still have 4/5 of the distance to cover, and 2 more steep mountains to climb: the one at Nendaz and the col de la Croix-de-Coeur, at the end of the race 🏁.
Once you arrive, you'll be able to celebrate your achievement with all the participants and competitors. Enjoy it, you've earned it 🏆.
This race is for our favorite little bambinos. They will be able to stretch their legs in the Swiss mountains ⛰️.
The "Bambinofondo" course consists of several 650 m 🔂 loops, to be completed according to the age category and remaining energy:
