Climb the Canigou and finish with tapas! 🥘

Benvinguts to the country where the sun shines 300 days a year and the accent sings as loudly as the tramontane blows! You've landed in the 66, this little paradise tucked between the Big Blue and sharp peaks, making the Catalans proud (and they will let you know). Here, the Blood and Gold flag flies everywhere, and if you're looking for a trail in the Pyrénées-Orientales, you'll quickly understand that flatland exists only on your plate of crema catalana. With its 4,116 km2 of striking contrasts, this department offers you the unique opportunity to run with your feet in the sand in the morning and your head in the clouds in the afternoon. Now is the time to book a bib to show that you have a heart as steadfast as a gecko on a dry stone wall 🦎.

Imagine a setting where the Pyrenees literally dive into the Mediterranean, creating wild coves and breathtaking balcony paths. That's the Côte Vermeille! As you embark on a nature run around Collioure or Banyuls, your eyes will be treated to terraced vineyards cascading toward the turquoise waters. But beware, the coastal path is not an easy stroll; it's a real leg-breaker that requires a new burst of energy. As you pass near Anse de Paulilles, remember that you're running on a former Nobel dynamite site turned into a peaceful haven. It's the perfect spot for a seaside race where the iodine slaps your face while you already dream of the glass of Muscat de Rivesaltes waiting for you at the finish line 🍷.

It is impossible to come here without greeting the "Canigó," the sacred mountain of the Catalans peaking at 2,784 meters. It's the lighthouse of the department, visible from the sea to Barcelona on clear days. Tackling its slopes means accepting a positive elevation gain that will make you regret your excess rousquilles (those delicious melting biscuits). Every year, thousands of enthusiasts climb this giant to deposit bundles of wood for the Saint John's fires. While climbing, you might pass fortified villages by Vauban, such as Villefranche-de-Conflent, a UNESCO site. It's a genuine mountain race where history watches you from the ramparts, and where you will surely encounter the Train Jaune, the "canary" train meandering through the Têt valley 🚂.

If you want to perform, you're in the right place because Font-Romeu is the mecca of high-altitude training. It is here, at the climatic sports high school, that trail god Kilian Jornet wore out his first sneakers and honed his legendary endurance. The CNEA (National High Altitude Training Center) hosts the world's top athletes, from Martin Fourcade to Paula Radcliffe. By checking the trail calendar, you'll see that many events cross these high Cerdan plateaus, where the air is so pure it almost seems like doping. You might even run near the Perpignan train station, which Salvador Dalí considered the "Center of the World" during an ecstatic vision. A fun fact to share for sparkling in conversation (or catching your breath) during a forest run among hook pines 🌲.

To live the experience to the fullest, here are the events that will make you vibrate. The 100 Miles South of France is the legendary ultra-trail that spans the entire department, from the mountains to the sea, an extraordinary adventure. If you love snow, the Romeufontaine in January is a magical white trail in Font-Romeu, where you run at night under the stars. The Canigou Races are a must for any self-respecting trail runner, with an incredible atmosphere at the summit. For spectacular marine views, the Madeloc Skytrail will have you climbing towards medieval signal towers above Collioure. Finally, the Trail de Quillan (just at the border but with routes that touch the 66) or the Vallespir Skyrace will offer you technical and wild trails. Every race is a celebration that often ends with a cargolade (grilled snails) with friends 🐌.

Whether you're here for performance or just to enjoy running in postcard-perfect landscapes, the Pyrénées-Orientales await you with open arms. Here, the people have warm blood, loud voices, and a generous welcome. So hesitate no longer, choose your challenge, whether vertical or coastal, and come write your own story on this land of exception. Now is the time to take the leap and grab your bib to experience an adventure where every kilometer tastes of the sun and freedom. Come on, sempre endavant (always forward), we'll meet at the starting line! 🏁
