The event in a few words

So, you've finished your little Sunday run and you're feeling like a warrior? ⚔️

Welcome to the big leagues 👑, where the mind gives up long before the legs. If you're browsing the trail race calendartrail in search of a challenge worthy of the name ☝️, the Chartreuse Terminorum is a top choice. Inspired by the mythical Barkley Marathons, this event is not just a nature race, it's a dive into the absolute unknown in the heart of Isère 📍. Here, forget your state-of-the-art GPS and caffeine gels: you are alone facing the forest, with a map 🗺️, a compass, and your sense of direction as your only salvation 🫡. We are in the Chartreuse massif, a land of silence and mystery 🍀 where monks of the Order of the Carthusians settled as early as 1084 to find absolute peace in the stone wilderness 🌲.

The concept of the Chartreuse Terminorum is as twisted as it is unforgettable: you must complete 5 laps of about 60 km each in 80 hours 🏃‍♀️, a mind-boggling total of 300 km with a positive elevation gain approaching 25,000 meters. An ultra-trail worthy of the most extreme 💪. To prove your passage, there is no electronic chip ❌, but instead, hidden books in improbable places from which you must tear the page corresponding to your bib number 📄. This is a direct homage to Lazarus Lake, creator of the Barkley 🤓, who launched this format after the failed escape of James Earl Ray (the assassin of Martin Luther King) who only covered 12 km in 60 hours in the woods 🪵. In Isère, this event is somewhat like the mass for the craziest trail runners 🤯. During 4 days of racing, the weather is mountainous, changeable, and sometimes merciless in mid-June, turning the trails into real mud skating rinks while testing your footing at every turn 🐽.

You will move between fir forests and limestone peaks like the Grand Som. Isère is a land of legends 🤠, and the Terminorum has already forged a great one with Sébastien Raichon 🏆, the phenomenal athlete who became the first finisher in history in 2023 after 71 hours of inhuman effort 🥵. Before him, the race always ended in a collective withdrawal 🥲. The French Ultra brings it back every year since the event was created in 2017. Each edition has a new name that is both funny and provocative: from "The 1st edition will be the easiest" to "2025, the return of impossible competitions"? 2023 and 2024 are the only editions with finishers, will you be the next to break the spell of withdrawal? 🤔

What will carry you to the end is the charm of the region: between two steep climbs 📈, you may glimpse an alpine dew or a mocking chamois 🐐. But beware, the heritage here is not just for viewing, it's for climbing! You will pass not far from the Monastery of Grande Chartreuse, a classified building where silence is golden and where the famous green liqueur with 130 plants 🌱 is still made, whose secret is better kept than grandmother's recipes 🍶. Between Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and the high plateaus ⬆️, you will discover why there are so many words to describe the slope in this area 😅.

We are far from big commercial events; this is the very essence of self-transcendence, even before the race 🤫. Participating in this demanding trail requires more than training 🏋️‍♀️; it demands an extra dose of madness 🤪. Bibs are as rare as finishers: only 40 chosen each year, selected on a motivation letter, sent by email to an address you will find only one day a year 📆, a day to be guessed thanks to a riddle... Let's say you have a better chance of winning the lottery! 🤑 But good news, after this process, you can take your bib for the symbolic sum of 3 euros 💶.

The Isère and its peaks await you to see if you have the guts to tame the beast 🏅 or if you too will end up hearing the bugle sound your failure 📯. So, are you ready to trade your comfort for a few torn pages and eternal glory in the Chartreuse massif? ⭐️
