Can you smell that lovely scent? It’s the smell of Spain, the smell of the sea, and above all the smell of the Santa Pola half marathon 🌊.
Head to the beautiful region of the Valencian Community for a race along the Mediterranean, caliente style 😎, near Alicante. Well, maybe not too caliente… You’ll probably swap your summer shorts for a good pair of leggings: it’s around 12°C in Santa Pola in mid-January. That said, for a race, we always brave the elements ☁️. This one will bring together around 10,000 runners from all over the world 🌍, all ready to stretch their legs after the excesses of the holiday season 🤪. Yes, we see you coming with your good resolutions 😉 (and you’re absolutely right!).
You can choose between two distances to satisfy your runner’s ego 💪: the half marathon or the 10K for those who prefer to save some energy for the afternoon tapas 🍤. The course is 90% flat and runs along the sea, so your usual excuses about elevation won’t work here 😅! You’ll follow the Mediterranean coast, passing in particular the 16th-century castle-fortress, perfect for imagining yourself in the running version of Game of Thrones 🏰. We’re being told in our earpiece that it’s the best season to run into Jon Snow ☃️. You’ll run along Santa Clara beach, the main avenues of the town center and the paradise seaside villas. If you’re looking for a goal, you can always try to beat the race record: 21.097 km in 59:09. Just so you know, it has stood since 2009 and was set by the famous James Kipsang Kwambai. It’s up to you whether you want to switch on rocket mode 🚀.
Once your well-earned medal is around your neck 🏅 and you’ve taken your shower 🚿, Santa Pola will welcome you with open arms for a real holiday 🏝️. This former fishing town 🎣 has kept all its old-world charm: a colorful port, fish markets 🐟, terraces facing the sea to sip a well-deserved sangria 🍷. You can explore the salt flats and their famous pink flamingos (who never run, the little rascals 🦩), stroll around the city center, or simply enjoy the surrounding beaches. You can always try a swim, but beware the shivers: at least you won’t need to pay for a cryotherapy session 🥶! As for food, it’s a seafood paradise: arroz con bogavante, arroz a banda or simply garlic prawns that smell like summer 🦐. And if you feel like playing the culture-hungry tourist, Alicante and its Santa Bárbara Castle are only 20 minutes away! All of it in a 100% Mediterranean atmosphere where stress doesn’t exist ✨.
So, shall we meet at the starting line? 🏁
You will start your journey at the port parking lot, Fernando Pérez Ojeda street, and head west through the streets of the city center 🏃♂️. You will then follow a national road between km 2 and 4, before heading back east. A small hairpin turn on one of the port’s jetties will let you enjoy the maritime atmosphere! ⚓
From km 8, you will run between the sea and villas until km 10, an idyllic setting with views of the Mediterranean 🌊. Then make a left U-turn to head back toward the center and Almirante Antequera street. You will pass along the children’s playground, with a welcome bit of greenery especially around km 15 🌳. The last three kilometers will feel familiar, as they retrace the route from km 4, 5 and 6, so you can finish on known ground!
The 10K generally follows the same route as the half-marathon, with a few variations 🏃♂️! Start on Fernando Pérez Ojeda street heading west of Santa Pola toward the Manolo Macia stadium 🏟️. You’ll run through streets lined with typical Spanish apartment buildings and their colorful facades until km 4. Your strides will then take you toward Santiago Bernabéu avenue, allowing you to run alongside Santa Pola beach 🏖️. In this area, you’ll do a 2 km out-and-back that will give you a good glimpse of the residential neighborhood. Head back toward the center to Del Palmerar park 🌴. At that point, you’ll have just one last kilometer left before the finish arch and the well-deserved snack! 🏁
