Feeling like lacing up your Basque-ettes again? 👟
In February, join the half marathon of the Bidassoa in Irún. Here, no hellish climbs or treacherous false flats: the course is flat, fast and certified for hungry time chasers 💥. Want to smash your PR? This is where it happens 📍. What makes this race unique is that it runs along the French-Spanish border for almost the entire route 🇪🇸. At the same time, that boundary is formed by... the Bidassoa River, hence the name of the race! 💦
You’ll therefore run along the Bidassoa, this river that comes straight from the Pyrenees and passes through Hendaye🏘️. We hope you’re ready to put down the watts ⚡️, because a route with zero elevation gain is waiting for you 🤩. On the agenda: 21 km of pure pleasure between spruced-up Basque facades, historic alleyways and seafront panoramas by the water’s edge 🌊. But this event isn’t a leisurely stroll ❌. Let’s just say that if you’re just starting out in running, this isn’t the time to mess with the Basques 😈. With a time limit of 2h30 and 5 checkpoints to validate, you’ll have to keep the pace, even if you’re not trained enough! 🤪 Starting from Irún, you’ll head up to the bay of Hondarribia, offering you a breathtaking view of Jaizkibel Mountain ⛰️. The event also offers a 10 km route if you prefer short, intense distances 💥. As a bonus, this race supports Tadamun Elkartea, and more specifically the “ Holidays in Peace ” program, which allows Sahrawi children to catch their breath away from the camps by spending the summer in Hondarribia. 100% of runners’ donations will be passed on to them 🫶. If that doesn’t make you run even faster, we don’t know what will 🥵.
Once your medal is around your neck, no way you’re heading straight home! 😊 “ What?? But I’m totally over it, I want to go home 😫”. Come oooon, a little motivation—the Basque Country is waiting for you with piping-hot pintxos 😋. Go devour grilled chipirons, melting croquetas, or a good Espelette axoa on a terrace, with a local craft beer or a nice cold glass of txakoli 🍷. And if you really want to take your post-race nap, head for the beaches of Hendaye, or treat yourself to a little swim in the coves of Hondarribia 💦. And if you’ve still got a bit of juice left in your calves ⚡️, a hike on the first foothills of the Basque mountains is waiting for you to help digest it all ⛰️.
So, ready to run faster than a Basque pelota player? ⚾️
The start is from Paseo de Colón in Irun 📍. The route follows the Bidassoa river toward Hondarribia, all the way to the end of the harbor in the Bay of Hondarribia 😍. Then, you head back the way you came to Irún. The second part of the route takes place in town and along the Bidassoa 💧. You’ll pass by spots such as the Santa Maria Gate and the Roman museum 🏛️. After a few loops, well done champion! You’ve arrived at Urdanibia Square, where you can pick up your medal🏅.
This route starts in the center of Irún, taking the Paseo de Colón 📍. Very quickly, you reach the banks of the Bidassoa River, which you follow for several kilometers 🏃. This stretch offers a smooth, flat section, ideal for maintaining a good pace 💨. Once this “nature” segment along the river is completed, you head back into the streets of Irún, with a more urban loop that crosses different neighborhoods of the city center. Like the half marathon, you finish at Urdanibia Square, right in the heart of Irún.
