In Quimper, running is a no-brainer

Capital of Cornouaille set at the confluence of the Odet and the Steir, Quimper blends cobbled lanes, riverbanks, and wooded trails. Between the sea and the Montagnes Noires, your next race is waiting.

Welcome to Quimper, proud sentinel of Finistère, that tip of land the Bretons nickname Penn ar Bed 🗺️. Its name comes from the Breton “kemper”, the confluence, where the Odet and the Steir meet at the foot of the cathedral 🌊. Set between the Atlantic and the Montagnes Noires, the city is the ideal base camp for anyone who wants to dash to the sea one day and climb inland the next. In under an hour, Brest, Concarneau, Douarnenez, Locronan and Bénodet complete the picture.

As for terrain, Quimper has it all. Mont Frugy towers over the center with its 70 wooded meters and offers a punchy climb to wake up your legs before coffee 🏃. Below, the towpaths follow the Odet down to the estuary—flat, shaded, made for stacking up kilometers without even looking up. The cobbled alleyways and half-timbered houses of the old quarter turn any outing into an urban trail between two Gothic spires 🏰. Higher up, the Stangala gorges and the woods of Ergué-Gabéric roll out technical singletrack above the river, with the Pointe du Raz in your sights to the west 🌲.

The Breton climate is part of the game—might as well own it. Here, a mild oceanic air holds sway all year round, keeping the undergrowth green and your legs fresh even in midsummer. The famous drizzle sometimes shows up, but a Quimper shower leaves almost as quickly as it arrives 🌧️. Spring and autumn remain the prime seasons: mild temperatures, low light on the Odet, and galette aid stations never far away. Winter keeps the trails greasy but runnable—perfect for fans of Breton mud.

To move from jogging to a bib, Quimper’s race calendar has plenty of character. The Ar Meilhou Glaz Trail takes runners onto the heights above the city in spring, with 8 to 16 km to choose from. The Trail de l'Odet, in Ergué-Gabéric, goes bigger with a format that stretches all the way to ultra along the river. The Boucles du Steir kick off winter with a half-city, half-nature course—walking included, so the whole tribe can join in. The In'Trail Xperience, for its part, dares to combine running and cross training over eight calf-burning loops 🏅. Farther afield, the half marathon linking Locronan to Quimper and the summer triathlon round out the offering—without forgetting a nod to the British Cornwalls opposite, Celtic cousins who even share the same name.

Quimper also knows how to bring forth champions. The cyclist Ronan Pensec, a local boy, wore the yellow jersey in the 1990 Tour before setting up his business on the banks of the Odet: proof that you can aim high starting from here 🔥. On the culture side, guitarist Dan Ar Braz, born in the city, set the Festival de Cornouaille alight and carried Breton music all the way to Eurovision 🎶. Between strides, lift your eyes to the spires of Saint-Corentin Cathedral, watched over by the statue of the legendary king Gradlon, then treat yourself to a faience bowl in the neighborhood that saw poet Max Jacob born. For your post-race refuel, galette-saucisse, kouign-amann and Cornouaille cider will set any tired calf back on its feet 🥞. Running in Brittany tastes like that: salty, sweet, stubborn. All that’s left is to choose your bib to match your level, from the easygoing 8K to the biting ultra. The full Breton calendar is waiting for you—and trust us: in Quimper, it’s going to kemper out just fine!
