City of Romeo and Juliet, Verona is run on the flat within the Adige’s loop, from the Roman Arena to the mythical balcony. Your race-day backdrop is waiting for you 💌
Verona has been staging its theatre for two thousand years. In the centre, the Roman Arena still holds the stage, transformed every summer into the world’s largest open-air opera 🏛️. Just a stone’s throw away, the House of Juliet and its balcony recall that Romeo and Juliet fell in love here, through Shakespeare’s pen 🎭. Piazza delle Erbe, Castelvecchio, the bridges: Running in Verona means crossing a postcard of pink marble.
The Adige wraps the old centre in a wide loop, and flat terrain dominates among the pink palaces. You link up the quays and bridges, from the Roman Ponte Pietra to Castelvecchio, on smooth, fast cobblestones 🌉. For a climb, the Torricelle close off the city to the north, the first hills of the Valpolicella vineyards where trail running gains height 🌿. Lake Garda is only twenty minutes away—another playground for your legs.
The best season is the shoulder seasons. Summers weigh heavy on the plain, but opera evenings under the stars make up for the heat ☀️. Winter brings the Po Valley fog, hushed and calm along the quays. Spring and autumn remain perfect—right when the city runs the most 🌫️. Culture and history cling to every stride, and the race calendar in Verona climbs to its peak in autumn.
Verona has its big day in autumn. The Verona Marathon rolls in mid-November through the centre and finishes in the Arena, with a marathon, half marathon, and an 8K to choose from 🥇. In February, the Romeo & Giulietta Half lets you run the half marathon of love; in May, StraVerona puts fifteen thousand walkers and runners out on the streets. Further afield, Veneto is made up of Venice, Padua, and the Dolomites. After the finish line: a risotto with Amarone (Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health; consume in moderation), a slice of pandoro, the cake born here 🍷. Damiano Tommasi, who played for Roma and is now Verona’s mayor, grew up in these hills; the painter Paolo Veronese was born here before covering Venice with frescoes 🎨. It’s up to you to aim for: a marathon, a half or a 10K.
