Take home the palm

Gothic cathedral facing the sea, peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana and 300 days of sunshine a year: Palma de Mallorca hosts marathon, triathlon, trail and sportive cycling on the same small slice of island.

Welcome to Palma, capital of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands, set at the back of its bay facing the Mediterranean 🌊. Around the city orbit Manacor, Calvià, Alcúdia and Sóller, each with its own terrain between agricultural plain, fishing port and mountain village. The whole island fits within an hour’s drive, which completely changes the logic of a race in Palma de Mallorca: morning on urban tarmac, afternoon at altitude—anything goes.

The playground is split into two worlds. On the city side, the seafront promenade and the alleys of the historic center offer a flat route, ideal for a first half marathon or an uncomplicated 10K. On the nature side, the Serra de Tramuntana, a limestone range listed by UNESCO, climbs to over 1,400 meters and unfurls dry-stone paved paths made for trail running 🏔️. Between the two, the Bay of Palma and its crystal-clear coves draw triathletes and swimrun enthusiasts who come to dip their wetsuits into calm, warm water.

The Mallorcan climate clearly plays in the athlete’s favor: more than 300 days of sunshine a year and mild winters that let you run year-round, even in January 🌤️. Summer heats up quickly, so it’s best to aim for spring or autumn to pin on a bib comfortably—periods that most local organizers favor.

Palma’s race calendar features a few solid fixtures. The Palma de Mallorca Marathon offers three formats—10K, half marathon and full marathon—with Boston qualification up for grabs 🏅. The Triatlón Port de Palma has competitors dive straight into the bay before the bike and run. Further across the island, the Ironman 70.3 Alcúdia strings together swim, bike and a half marathon in a setting of mountains and coves, while Mallorca by UTMB takes on the Tramuntana head-on for fans of technical trail running ⛰️. On two wheels, the legendary Mallorca 312 sends sportive cyclists and gravel riders around the entire island, a format that built Mallorca’s cycling reputation long before the arrival of runners 🚴. A nod as well to nearby Menorca, where the Camí de Cavalls lays out an equally renowned coastal ultra-trail.

When it comes to famous names, it’s hard not to mention Rafael Nadal, born in Manacor just a short distance from the capital, who became one of the greatest champions in the history of Spanish sport 🎾. On the film side, Rossy de Palma, Pedro Almodóvar’s muse, grew up in the streets the marathon now runs through. After the effort, Mallorcan fare comforts you with sweet ensaïmada, sobrasada and pa amb oli, bread drizzled with local olive oil 🍽️. Heritage rounds out the picture: the Gothic La Seu Cathedral dominates the bay, while Bellver Castle keeps watch from its circular hill.

So whether it’s a first 10K along the seafront, a triathlon in the bay, a sportive ride around the island, or a demanding trail in the Tramuntana, everyone can find their format depending on their level and what they feel like that day 🎯. All that’s left is to choose the discipline and book your bib.
