Looking to run in the sun at the beginning of January? ๐
No need to pack a winter coat ๐งณ, you're heading to the south of Sicily! ๐ On the beautiful island of Italy, the Ragusa Marathon (or 21ยฐ Mangia's Maratona Di Ragusa 2026 from its real name) stands out in the landscape of road races in the country ๐. Speaking of landscapes: you'll see a lot in 42 km! ๐บ๏ธ Countryside, villages, typical hamlets with dry stone walls ๐๏ธ, Ragusa will no longer hold any secrets for you! ๐ You may have noticed that the city of Ragusa consists of two parts: the upper town, Ragusa Nuova, and a lower, older town, Ragusa Ibla. Height means gradient, but don't worry, the Ragusa Marathon only has one big climb ๐ค.
The finish line will have to be earned! โ๏ธ Marathon, half-marathon, 21 km walk, or the "Family Run" of 3.2 km ๐โโ๏ธ, the goal will be the same for everyone: reach the Piazza Duomo โฌ๏ธ. During the queen event of the day, you will discover the villages on the outskirts of this two-level city ๐ค. You will cross Cilone, Tre Casuzze, Monachella, Cisternazzi, Fortugno, the industrial area ๐ญ, and the mining area โ๏ธ before enjoying a 6 km downhill section ๐. At km 38, things get tough: it's going to be uphill! You'll prepare to join the upper historic center via the Ponte Vecchio and the Piazza della Cattedrale di San Giovanni. After discovering UNESCO monuments such as the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale โช๏ธ, the Palazzo Cosentini, the Church of the Purgatory, and the Palazzo Sortino-Trono ๐, you'll need to hold on a bit longer! ๐ช A steep 300-meter climb on Via XI Febbraio will finish off your calves (but maybe your spirits ๐ฅต). Yes, Ragusa is exhausting! ๐ฒ
Once you have your medal around your neck ๐ฅ, it's time to recover and enjoy! ๐ In terms of gastronomy, you will be well served in Italy ๐ฎ๐น. The province of Ragusa is full of specialties, notably the Cadurra, a type of durum wheat bread ๐ฅ, and the Caciocavallo DOP Ragusano, one of the oldest cheeses in Sicily! ๐ง We recommend trying them together ๐. Once your stomach is full, visit the Val di Noto and its seven cities classified as UNESCO World Heritage! ๐๏ธ To learn more about this valley's history ๐ฒ, you can visit the Donnafugata Castle and the Trabacche Cave, true witnesses of history ๐คฏ. To end on a high note, what better than to gain some altitude? ๐ถโ๐ซ๏ธ Yes, again you might say, but this time by climbing mountains: the Hyblean Mountains โฐ๏ธ.
No more excuses not to run the Ragusa Marathon! ๐คช
Let's go for 42 km around the hill!
After 5 kilometers in the downtown area, you will embark on 32 km through the countryside. Countryside, villages, and hamlets... guaranteed escape! ๐ค You will pass through Cilone and Tre Casuzze, with lanes lined with dry stone walls ๐ชจ, a true rural symbol of Ragusa! Don't wear your best white shoes for this marathon, as you might get them dirty on the trails ๐ฝ. After your countryside tour, you'll land in the residential neighborhoods of Monachella, Cisternazzi, and Fortunago ๐๏ธ. After swallowing those kilometers, you'll cross the industrial area and the mining area โ๏ธ.
Arriving at km 32, you'll have a nice surprise: downhill until km 38! ๐ But be careful not to burn out, as you still have 4 km and a big climb ๐ฌ. The km 38 marks your entrance into the upper historic center, entering the small lanes and among the Unesco-listed monuments! ๐๏ธChurch of Santa Maria delle Scale, the Palazzo Cosentini, the Church of the Purgatory, and even the Palazzo Sortino-Trono... So many buildings that will make you forget the pain in your calves ๐ฆต. One last obstacle will stand in your way on your final kilometer: the 300 meters of steep climb on Via XI Febbraio ๐.
You'll just have to conquer a few cobblestones to shout victory on Piazza Duomo! ๐ฅ
After a series of climbs ๐ and descents ๐ at the start of the course, the Half-Marathon follows the last 19 kilometers of the Marathon! ๐ค
