The event in a few words

California loooove 🎶

So here it is: we’re taking you to experience a true hell on the west coast of the United States 🇺🇸! Right in the heart of the state of California, during the sweltering month of July, the iconic Badwater Ultramarathon💥 takes place. This legendary event has proclaimed itself the toughest running race in the world 🥵. The adventure was born from a crazy idea in the mid-1970s: linking the lowest point and the highest point of the contiguous United States ↔️. In 1974, 1975 and 1976, an athlete named Al Arnold bravely attempts the challenge but fails each time in the face of the elements’ violence. Far from giving up, he trains in extreme conditions, even going so far as to run in saunas, and finally succeeds in his insane bet in 1977 ✅. Ten years later, in 1987, this saga turns into an ultra-private annual competition reserved for a few dozen handpicked runners. The setting for this madness is none other than the formidable Death Valley, which Native Americans still call today by its original name: Tüpippüh 🏜️. In this mystical desert, the atmosphere is literally volcanic, with temperatures regularly exceeding 50 °C in the shade 🥵. In the sun, the mercury cheerfully crosses the 70 °C mark, while ground temperature hovers around 75 °C! In that heat, you could cook an egg right on the asphalt 🍳.

As if the conditions weren’t complex enough, the course is linear, non-stop and relentless over 217 km, i.e., the famous 135 miles that serve as the World Championship of the discipline 🏆. The clock runs without interruption, with an overall time limit set at 45h since recent rule updates 😍. The start is given at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, located 85.5 meters below sea level 📉. The profile is a technical monster that crosses three distinct mountain ranges ⛰️. It imposes a cumulative elevation gain of 4,450 mD+ for a cumulative descent of 1,859 mD- 📈. Along the way, runners pass through places with evocative names born of legends and tortured geology, like Mushroom Rock, Furnace Creek, Salt Creek, Devil’s Cornfield or the incredible Devil’s Golf Course 🤩. After negotiating the formidable stops of Stovepipe Wells and Panamint Springs, then passing through the towns of Darwin and Keeler, the finish line finally comes into view at Whitney Portal 😍. This strategic point, perched at 2,548 meters of altitude on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, marks the start of the official trail leading to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the country ⬆️.

Once you cross the line at the end of all that suspense, your recovery program promises to be memorable and full of emotion 💤. The small Californian village of Lone Pine awaits you with open arms to relax and celebrate your epic feat 🥳. You’re in a true pop culture sanctuary 🪩. Lone Pine borders the spectacular Alabama Hills, rounded, golden rock formations famous worldwide for having served as a natural set for hundreds of Hollywood films, from the great westerns of John Wayne to modern blockbusters like GladiatorDjango Unchained or Iron Man 🎬. Once you’ve recovered from the emotion and shaken off the desert dust, treat yourself to a huge, typically American meal to recharge your batteries and savor this moment of glory and international recognition! 🍔

So, ready to come back completely...burnt? 🔥
