Hautes-Alpes, top level ⬆️
In the heart of summer, during the month of August, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region turns into a stage for monumental feats with the Embrunman 💥. Born in 1984 in a short format, this legendary triathlon quickly morphed in 1990 to take on the XXL format of a mountain mountains triathlon over Ironman distance ☄️. Today, it has built a rock-solid reputation for being one of the toughest on the planet, no less! 🌍 The rallying point for this sweet madness is around Embrun, where the pre-race atmosphere starts sending heart rates soaring well before you've even set foot in the water 💦. Only the elite can realistically aim for a podium, so everyone else focuses on the essential: crossing the finish line before the final time cut of 17 hours 😳. It's an extraordinary human adventure where every finisher earns the right to be called an "Embrunman" or an "Embrunwoman" 👑.
For the flagship event, you'll have to show rock-solid mental strength to string together 232 kilometers in total 👏. It starts with a (😵💫) muscle wake-up: 3.8 km of swimming in the waters of the Embrun lake, with no disruptive current 🏊. The transition sends you straight into a cycling worksite of 188 km with no less than 3,600 mD+ 🥵. This legendary route takes you flirting with the summits as you cross the Écrins National Park and the Queyras National Park 🌱. You'll pass through villages such as Saint-Clément-sur-Durance before tackling the tough Col d'Izoard, at over 2,360 m altitude 😲. You then drop down toward Briançon, Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières-et-Réotier 🔎. The final leg features a marathon totaling 400 mD+, starting from the lake📍. The course takes you up to the village of Embrun and along the Durance, with the main "treat" being a 1,500-meter climb at a 5% gradient that you'll have to tackle three times in a row 🥴. It's going to seriously sting the muscles, but the local fervor will propel you to the finish line 🎉. For triathletes who'd rather not completely torch their legs, the organizers have thought of everything by offering the Quarter Embrunman 🐟 format. Don't underestimate this "small" bite, which still delivers 1.5 km of swimming, 44 km of road cycling and 10 km of road running to give you a thrill without spending the whole day on it 😴.
Once you've tamed the monster and sealed your title as the day's hero or heroine, the warrior's rest finally becomes a must (YES!! 🎰). The region is packed with exceptional spots to soothe your aches and recharge your batteries 🔋. You can start by laying down your towel on the shore of Lake Serre-Ponçon for a moment of total relaxation with your feet in the water 🏞️. If you still have the energy for a gentle stroll, head to the charming town of Gap less than an hour's drive away 🚗. Lovers of wild nature can treat themselves to a contemplative outing in the Écrins National Park to observe the local flora and fauna without a bib on your back 🙌. To round off this Alpine weekend in style, a cultural stop is a must in the famous Vauban citadel of Briançon, a jewel of fortified architecture steeped in history that will leave you with unforgettable memories 🏰.
