The event in a few words

Take on the challenge at one of Scandinavia’s most famous and most scenic mountain running festivals! Årefjällen Mountain Marathon Week takes place in the Årefjällen region, and the atmospheric mountain and village of Ottsjö is one of the main hearts of the event 🏃🇸🇪. There’s a full range of distances to choose from: from the brutal 100 km ultra, through the flagship Kia Fjällmaraton (45 km) starting in Trillevallener, the 27 km and 12 km races, to the punishing Vertical K. The course runs through wild mountains (fjäll), soggy peat bogs (myr), the rocky ridgelines of the Ottfjället massif, and technical forest trails of Jämtland.

After battling on Swedish trails, the Ottsjö and Åre region offers wonderful Scandinavian relaxation in nature! Walk the marked paths around the charming village of Ottsjö and along the shore of Lake Ottsjön – from here you’ll find one of the most famous and most frequently photographed mountain panoramas in all of Sweden 🏞️. Head to the nearby town of Åre and take the gondola or cable car (Åre Kabinbana) to the top of Åreskutan to enjoy the views without the effort, or spend some quiet time on the sandy lakeside beach 🚡🏖️ and then visit the mighty, spectacular waterfalls: Tännforsen (the largest waterfall in Sweden) and Ristafallet, known among other things from film shots in the adaptation of the novel Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter 🌊.

To end the day, try traditional northern dishes: a hearty reindeer meat stew (Renskav) with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, and freshly caught mountain trout. For a well-deserved Scandinavian coffee break (Fika), choose a warm cinnamon bun (Kanelbulle) or a cardamom yeast bun ☕🥐
