So, you want to swap your usual pass for the tracks of the Atlas? Good news: the GravelMan Series is setting its panniers down in Marrakech in January, and honestly, it looks completely wild. Having trouble picturing it? No problem, we’ll help: desert 🏜️, perched Berber villages 🏘️, Toubkal at 4,167 m looking down at you from above, and tracks that never seem to end. Morocco is a rather dry country 🌵, so there’s a good chance you’ll get sunshine ☀️ and temperatures between 10°C and 20°C. The pitch is simple: you leave from the town of Ourika heading for the High Atlas, climb up to the high-altitude villages (hello, thighs 🔥), cross landscapes, then dive back down toward Marrakech, the ochre city. In between, you’re going to eat elevation gain by the spoonful 🥄, rocks (if you choose the gravel option 🪨), and you’ll probably wonder why you didn’t stay on the couch 🛋️ a bit longer after the holidays 🎉. But that’s what’s good! As they say, “start with the legs, finish with the mind.” Spoiler: you’re going to need that mindset 💪. Alright, now let’s get down to it.
The GravelMan Series Marrakech isn’t ONE race—it’s TWELVE races. Yes, you read that right: twelve. Enough to satisfy everyone, from the hardcore fan of Eddy Merckx and Tadej Pogačar, who wants to do 600 km (7,500 mD+), to the Sunday recreational cyclist who’ll stick to 60 km (1,000 mD+). In between? 500 km, 350 km (6,000 mD+), 200 km (4,500 mD+), and 120 km (2,000 mD+) formats. And the cherry on the tagine 🍒: each distance exists in a Gravel version (mix of road/track) OR a Road version (100% asphalt). Don’t have a gravel bike? No worries—come with your road bike! Love chewing on rocks? There’s plenty of that. Morocco in all its splendor! ✨ What’s great about the GravelMan Series is that “back to basics” spirit. No broom wagon, no mechanic every 30 km... Just you, your bike, and your resourcefulness! Got a puncture? 🛞 You fix it. Hungry? You’d better have planned some energy bars 🍫. Lost? You pull out your map 🗺️. Run into goats? 🐐 You weave around them and say hello 👋. This forced self-sufficiency is what makes all the magic of the adventure 🪄. When you reach the end, you truly feel like you’ve accomplished something big. You won’t have just finished a race—you’ll have lived a real journey.
The backcountry of Marrakech is another world 🌍, and you’ll have plenty of time to see it as you pedal 🚴. That said, after your little getaway, there are loads of things to discover. If you’re worried you won’t have time to hit the trails this year, the Oukaïmeden ski area ⛷️ will open its doors to you at 3,200 m altitude. Yes, snow isn’t a myth on the African continent ❄️. You can also discover the secrets of the Ourika Valley or the Ouzoud Waterfalls further east, before heading back toward Marrakech. The souks, the Medina, the Majorelle Garden—these are all places just waiting for you. We still haven’t talked about the comfort part... Well, the comfort of your stomach! Let us tell you: you’re going to be well served 🍽️. Moroccans absolutely do not mess around with that. Among the must-tries, you absolutely have to taste couscous—it’s THE national dish—harira 🍜, msemen 🥞, tanjia, as well as a good Moroccan kebab! For something sweet, go straight for sfenj, gazelle horns, and chebakia. You’ve got to recover in style! 😉
