Forget snow and mulled wine—here we swap mittens for bar tape! 🚴
Right in the heart of December, when the rest of France is getting ready to hibernate, Gravelman Marseille invites you to defy the laws of seasonality under the blazing sun of Provence ☀️. Located in the Bouches-du-Rhône, this legendary stop of the Gravelman Series offers no fewer than ten different formats to satisfy every urge to get away 🏞️. You can choose your weapon between “Gravel” mode (around 60–70% tracks) or “Road” (100% asphalt) over distances of 60 km, 120 km, 200 km, 350 km and 500 km. With elevation gains climbing up to 7,000 mD+ for the bravest, your mindset will be your best ally against the steep relief of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region 😉.
The route is a true tribute to Mediterranean landscapes 🪻. You leave the bustle of the Phocaean city behind to plunge into the wild backcountry, where limestone rock gleams under the winter sun. Get ready to cross emblematic massifs like Sainte-Baume or to skim ridgelines along the coast. Here, the scenery is worthy of a Marcel Pagnol film—but without time for a game of pétanque 😲. You’ll wind between umbrella pines and fragrant garrigue 🌲, with the imposing silhouette of Sainte-Victoire in the background, which so inspired Cézanne 🧑🎨.
The Gravelman vibe is, above all, the spirit of bikepacking: no support, just you, your bike, and your GPS track 🚴. Far from the “can-chasing” mindset of traditional races, here we champion pure adventure and sharing 🤲. Between pedal strokes, you might spot the Frioul Islands in the distance or ride through Provençal villages where time seems to have stood still. For the curious, passing near the Massif de l’Étoile offers plunging viewpoints over the Bay of Marseille that are worth every ounce of effort 💫. It’s the perfect opportunity to end the year on a high note by treating yourself to a major sporting challenge in an exceptional natural setting. 🌊
If you extend your stay, don’t miss going to say hello to the “Bonne Mère” at Notre-Dame de la Garde for a panoramic view over the city, or strolling through the lanes of Le Panier. ⛪️ For recovery, local gastronomy is your best sponsor 🍽️: after the effort, a steaming bouillabaisse or a dozen navettes from Saint-Victor (those orange-blossom biscuits that bring any cyclist back to life) are mandatory. You don’t come to Marseille only to ride—you come to soak up a culture where sea salt mixes with sweat ⚓️.
Swing a leg over your steed and join the bunch for an adventure that’ll give you the accent of pushing your limits (if not the Marseille accent)! 🤓
