Let's be honest: if James Bond had to swap his Martini ๐ธ for a beer after a high-speed chase in the Province of Antwerp, this is where he'd come ๐ต๏ธ.
The Great Breweries Marathon is the Inception of running: an immersion in a brewery ๐ป, within another brewery, in the heart of Flanders. Starting from Puurs-Sint-Amands, the event offers you five formats: marathon, 25 km, and 17 km, the latter two being doable by walking! ๐ถ This early May day promises to be under the sign of malt ๐พ and sunshine ๐. But no drinks on the terrace, you'll have to lace up your sneakers ๐ and cover the kilometers before you can enjoy the tasting once you cross the finish line! ๐
The route is more rolling than a barrel rolling downhill ๐ข๏ธ, which is perfect for your joints ๐. We're leaving the beaten path to enter the inner sanctum: you will tread the ground of the Duvel Moortgat brewery. For a bit of history, "Duvel" means "devil" in local dialect ๐. It is said that a neighbor, impressed by the potency of the brew, exclaimed: "It's a real devil!" That's exactly what your legs will be saying when you speed up in front of the giant vats ๐ฌ. The ambiance? It's a joyful mix between a Tour de France stage and a village festival that lasted a little too long ๐คช. With over 5,000 participants, you're far from the loneliness of the long-distance runner. Here, we run for the heritage, for the smell of hops tickling your nostrils and for the refreshments that are out of the ordinary ๐. You won't encounter any traffic jams on the course (apart from those from the bottles ๐), but you might have some after crossing the finish line, when everyone rushes to grab their precious tasting pack ๐.
If you want to make a detour, make a jump to the fort of Breendonk. It's rich with history and makes you realize that your muscle aches are just a minor detail ๐ . To impress at the next dinner ๐ฝ๏ธ, don't forget to try the Malines Asparagus. It's local, it's seasonal, and it's a change from the usual pre-race pasta dish ๐ฅ.
Brew if you can! ๐คฏ The Great Breweries Marathon awaits its best brewers runners to honor the Flemish land ๐บ.
The main event ๐ธ offers a complete loop through Puurs, Buggenhout, and Londerzeel. The route has many highlights: crossing through the woods of Buggenhoutbos ๐ณ and the full immersion in the three partner breweries ๐ป.
This intermediate format is the perfect compromise for those who want a challenge without the demands of a marathon ๐ค. The course includes the most iconic sections, including the indoor brewery passages ๐ป.
The route of the walk is the same as that of the run ๐.
An accessible distance to savor the atmosphere of the Great Breweries without overextending yourself ๐ชฝ. The route is very smooth, winding through the rural landscapes of the province of Antwerp and the famous brewing production sites ๐พ.
