The event in a few words

If you think hell is paved with good intentions, know that here, it is mostly paved with granite and schist as far as the eye can see 😈.

Welcome to the Hardrock 100 😎, or Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run for those in the know (and those who still have enough breath to pronounce its full name 🌬️). We're not talking about a simple running race 🏃‍♂️, but a wild pilgrimage through the heart of the mountains of San Juan, in the southwest of Colorado 📍. This monument of the global ultra-trail 🌍 is a vibrant tribute to the miners who dug these peaks ⛰️, and believe me, you will have to dig into your reserves to see the end ⚒️. In terms of numbers, we're looking at a flagship event of 160 km (the famous 100 American miles) with a positive elevation gain of 10,000 mD+. But the true judge here is the altitude ⬆️. The course evolves at an average altitude of 3,350 m, which means you'll spend more time searching for oxygen than finding where to place your feet 🦶. The highest point, Handies Peak, propels you to 4,282 m, where the sky and the earth end up blending 🌄. The start and finish take place in the mythical village of Silverton, in mid-July, under a climate that can shift from blazing sun ☀️ to hailstorm ⛈️ in a flick of the fingers 🫰.

The course is a masterful loop connecting Silverton, Lake City, Ouray, and Telluride. A little twist that makes the race legendary: its direction changes every year 🔄. One edition races clockwise ⌚️ ("Clockwise") and the next one in the opposite direction 🤪. In any case, you're likely to encounter snow and some wild animals in the middle of the Colorado wilderness. Be careful not to cry wolf 🐺. You'll pass through ghost towns like Sherman, cross 13 passes over 3,700 m 🤯, and sometimes have to improvise with persistent snowfields or raging rivers 😅. It's not just the rock that's hard (hard rock 🪨), the conditions will be just as tough 🙃. It's a demanding, breaking course, but with a beauty that will break your heart before it breaks your legs 😬. The DNA of the Hardrock is above all a bonded community and total humility in the face of the elements. With only 146 bibs distributed each year through a drawing 🎁 more selective than admission to Harvard 🎓, the excitement is incredible but the atmosphere remains familial and "good-natured". The organizers don't even consider their event as a high-flying competition 🦅 but rather as a wellness walk, a way to reconnect with the essentials ☝️. There is no red carpet at the finish: the ritual is to go and kiss "The Rock" 😚, that famous stone block with a painted ram's head on it 🐏.

It's hard to talk about the Hardrock without mentioning its champions: the Americans Karl Meltzer, Betsy Kalmeyer, Diana Finkel, and Courtney Dauwalter, great specialists on terrain dear to them 🇺🇸, the Catalan Kílian Jornet, a real UFO of ultra 🇪🇸 who won the victory 5 times with a flask in hand or an arm in a sling 🤕, or the French veterans François D'Haene and Ludovic Pommeret 🇫🇷. Each in their way, they have marked the history of trail by kissing the rock before the others 💪. Between 21h and 26h, no more is needed for these legends of the discipline to finish with THE legend of the ultra-trail. So are you brave enough to tackle these more than hard performances? 😏

Once you've properly kissed the ram and your legs are demanding a break 😴, Silverton and its surroundings offer you the perfect setting for gentle recovery 🌲. We strongly recommend heading towards the Ouray Hot Springs ⛲️ to dip your sore muscles into natural hot springs ♨️, a true luxury after 160 km of battle ⚔️. If you still have some energy, hop on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad 🚂, a historic steam train that winds through the canyons 🏜️ and allows you to admire the peaks without breaking a sweat 🤗. For lovers of local culture, the streets of Silverton, with their colorful facades preserved from the 19th century, will immerse you in the atmosphere of the gold rush 💰. It's the perfect time to share a well-deserved burger in a typical saloon 🍔 and relive the race with other "Hardrockers" while savoring a Colorado craft beer 🍻. We are far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, and it's exactly what you need to come back down to earth after touching the stars ⭐️.

So, ready to enter history and brand your name in red-hot iron on the peaks of Colorado? 🤩
